I am doing my internship at an inn called Newagen Seaside Inn on Southport Island, Maine. Some observations I have made since I have been on internship would be that the majority of the summer staff in the inn is different from the year round staff. The summer staff is more international such as we have people from Jamaica, Ghana, Russia and a few others. The entire staff is really nice and helpful if you have any problems. The workflow is very smooth and everyone knows what that have to do that day. During a busy day or an event day everyone knows what they have to do and how to move around the event. The management at the inn is regulated well and the entire staff knows who they work under and who they have to report too. Each Tuesday there is a meeting with the owner of the inn and the manager of each staff.
As an internship student they treat me like part of their staff. Since I am only working with the event team. The event team consists of three event coordinators who treats me like one of them and they give me a lot of responsibility. The head of the Event Team Cherie Scott put me in charge of our huge conference next week called Heinemann. I will be there from 6am-10pm every day and I will get a lot of experience and learn how to work a conference. It will be good practice for if I have to run one later on. The second, would be that I am working weddings every weekend and i get to learn how to set up, break down, expedite dinner orders, set up lobster bakes, how to arrange tables and flowers. For my co-op assignment I worked for the Clark College Foundation as a Prospect Research/Database Intern. When I first entered the foundation I was unsure of how I would fit into the organization. This would be the first time I had ever worked in an office environment and I had no idea what would be expected of me and if I would be able to perform the job that I had been hired for.
Some of the limitations that I felt myself come across is that as an intern I was not able to follow up with my case load as much as I would have wanted. For one, my program is outpatient community based, meaning most of my interactions were at his home with a social worker because we are not allowed to use government vehicles to make home visits. This was difficult because I was not able to gain full rapport with my client because there was always an extra set of eyes that was also interfering with the process of rapport building. My other limitation was that I was only available two days a week which made it hard for me to be there as his case manager given the fact that he was in crisis a couple of times.
My internship began with a short orientation of KPMG’s office located in the Wells Fargo Building of downtown Minneapolis. After some introductions and a few training sessions that outlined what was expected of us in terms of the rules and laws we were required to follow including disclosure of client and firm information and independence affidavits, for example, we were briefed on our trip to Orlando for National Internship Training which would take place the following work day. Training for Partnership-focused federal tax interns would last a whole week filled with events and educational seminars that would introduce us to tax fundamentals and software tutorials that would be helpful during our time with KPMG. On the 25th of December 2014, in Taupo, I had volunteered to work at a homeless shelter. While I was there I had got told the procedures on what I was going to do on the job. My duties while working there was, cleaning, cooking, and serving. The idea of the homeless shelter is to meet, feed, and welcome other people that are less fortunate than us on Christmas.
Coming into this internship, I was anxious. I was excited going into my last semester of community college but I wanted to find out how my school schedule would look like with the internship. Driving to Rahway on a friday afternoon to discover was needed. The area surrounding the YMCA seemed nice. Different from my neighborhood for sure. Inside the YMCA looked way better than Plainfield. When I met with the YMCA director, she seemed nice. She was talking about how she wanted to create programs to interest kids. It seemed like she generally cared about building relationships with people more than just getting money out of a family. Before the internship, I thought judges were of course humans, but I was hoping they were nice. I thought it was going to be a bit intimidating, but I knew I looked up and aspired their profession. It was like the day I was going to meet my judge I was so nervous, yet I looked forward to it. I remember I was surprised different Judges would run their courtrooms differently. I thought they would kind of have a similar system for things, which they sort of do, but not completely. Generally speaking, the Judges are great individuals and are very unique. Most of the Judges have lived pretty interesting lives and seem to enjoy their jobs. The Judges seem to be very knowledgeable, and very considerate of the Jury, court reporters, and their clerks. The judges of course seem neutral when in front of the jury as expected. For example, Judge Lippitt, does not allow anytime to speak over each other in her court room she is always saying that they have to be respectful there is a human being recording this, referring to the court reporter. Then, she is very considerate of the Jury and their time, she will tell them the trial is longer at times to make them happy if it ends early. Further, Judge Lippitt really cares about the jury instructions and that they are as neutral as possible. Something I have learned from Judge Lippitt, is that you have to be very careful as a judge to notice when attorney’s are acting a little suspicious. Another very significant lesson I have learned from Judge Lippitt is that preparedness and awareness is really important.
Initially when I was looking for an internship, my goal was to find one that complemented my double major in criminology & criminal justice and psychology. During my search, I found some reputable organizations, but quickly discovered that they either required an extended training/orientation period or were not compatible with my schedule. Thus in finding the Urban Education Leaders Internship Program (UELIP) of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), which primarily focuses on an interest in education and public policy, I was skeptical that my interest in criminal psychology would be met. However, I quickly learned that this was not the case. Not only did my internship with DCPS indirectly appeal to my major, but it also provided me with a valuable experience in which I acquired fundamental skills and learned more about myself.
From business conferences to weddings, there are events going on all around us, and where there are events there are event planners constructing it, putting it all together, while making everything run effectively. Event planning is always unpredictable and you need to be always ready for any problematic situation that may occur. When starting out there is a great chance that problems will occur that one will not prepared to face, but this is all a part of the improvement process. These situations should be looked at as a learning experience and should give you some ideas of how to improve one’s event planning skills and one’s own business. Because of all the hospitality, craziness, and personal gratification, I have chosen to become an event planner.
Before this internship, I believe the most important aspect of a general operation manager is the professional work background and ability or skills such as data analysis or data mining because managers need to know how to convert raw data into useful information for smarter decisions. This class was the first opportunity I had to learn about the event planning industry. I knew that it took a lot to put together an event, but I had never fully realized how much actually goes into it. As a hospitality major, event planning is a necessary skill to have even though I do not plan to become an event planner. If I had the option to start working in this industry tomorrow, there would be several things that would either help or hinder me.
The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation. However, I did encounter some problems, which I gradually managed to deal with. Whatever happens, productivity increases by keeping a positive attitude.
Goals - My goals for my internship at the Rockford Center include: becoming more familiar with Social Workers in Rockford and also in other settings, learning how to interview patients on my own with confidence, learning how to execute the discharge process of patients independently without having to ask my supervisor for assistance, becoming more familiar with adolescents and being mindful of their feelings, being more patient with myself, learning how to create boundaries with patients and lastly being more assertive in the workplace. Since I am a visual learner, I believe that I can meet these goals by watching my supervisor when she interviews patients, when she takes notes during the interviews, as well as when she fills out the appropriate paperwork for each case. I also learn by simply doing tasks on my own as well. Thus, it is very useful for me when my supervisor tells me what she needs done and challenges me to remember the appropriate protocol for each task.
This paper focuses on the personal experiences gained from the internship while supporting the functions of Human Resources (HR) at the University of Texas at El Paso. The HR department provides a variety of services to all Staff, Faculty and Student employees.
