Going into the studio for my first few sessions I was pretty confident. I seemed to have a pretty good grasp on the software, and I have quite a bit of experience making music electronically. Each time I went in, I felt that I had come out with a better piece, and I was making significant progress. I was quite content with my project, rendered it out, and gave it another listen later that evening, and I suddenly hated it. Maybe it was just from listening to it too much, or maybe I was just blinded by the new tools to really analyze what I was making, but I couldn’t bear the thought of handing it in as my project, so in my last studio session, I started over. And overall, I sincerely think it’s a better track.
The main areas that I think I went wrong in while working on my first project were the instrumentation, the sound design, and the overall staleness of the beat. The different sounds did not work together very well. They were not working melodically or rhythmically. Furthermore, the individual sounds that I created were often just bad. My bass was muddy, my lead synth was boring, and my samples weren’t great. Finally, I could not come up

This one didn’t use any drum hits, instead it had different instrument’s samples, as well as a vocal sample. I browsed through many options, and settled on four unique sounds, a Rhodes piano sample, a vocal choir’s note, a didgeridoo and a flute phrase. For effects, I add some low-pass filters to take some edge off of some sounds, and used compression and reverb to tighten up or loosen up some of the sounds. I also added a mute modifier to a blank pad to mute the kit while playing, to move with the percussion. I played with these sounds for a while, and while I liked it, it needed a bit more. So I duplicated both my Rhodes and vocal sample, and pitched them both down. Now I had the opportunity to create some melody with my different pitches. This lead to a much more lush sounding
The sandstone of the sandstone. This is what makes the audience sit at the edge of their seats. The sand is a sand. The fast beat combined with the percussion and volume creates
Listening then, I just thought it sounded nice, but analyzing it today I can truly appreciate the care that went into their work. There aren’t many songs that give me chills, but every time I hear their rendition of Landslide (written by Stevie Nicks), I can feel it head to toe. The pacing of the instrumentation and harmony coming in is simply perfect.
This effect was made by placing a plunger at the opening of a brass instrument, therefore, muffling or muting the notes played out. The result sounded like a person wailing, giving the piece a voice-like quality. In "Concerto for Cootie," Cootie Williams does a solo using the jungle effect, making it sound like a voice is singing along. His opening solo is repetitive, going over the same set of notes over and over again. The overall feeling is as if the music is wooing the listener.
One of the many styles of music at the market was a four-man drum band. This band played very rhythm based music and had an almost improvisational feel to their music. They would start a song and then let the music guide them from melody to melody. The drummers also played their own individual melody which resulted in a polyphonic piece and a perfect example of surface rhythm. Each performer’s own melody, although different individually, combined to form one melody and rhythm that permeated throughout the performance. The music, which was primarily in quadruple meter and ranged in tempo from andante to allegro, was also very happy and consonant sounding with no feelings of instability. This consonance was due the music being percussion music with no
My sixteen week class in English 111. I was really nervous about this class. Because English has never been my strong point. This class has hard, but fun all at the same time. I learn a lot from this class. Meanwhile, the first day of class you handed a paper with a question on it. “The first thing I want to say to you who are students is that you must not think of being here to receive an education; instead, you will do much better to think of being here to claim one.” Even though putting my all in what I have learned, claiming my education with hard work because using the skills of the meal plan, as we write to different audiences and learning to be a Critically thinker as I start becoming a critically-Literate Citizenship.
Many of the mistakes I would have deemed inconsequential in the past resembles glaring flaws now. The introduction and conclusion paragraphs were where the most work was done. In the introduction, I inserted a hook and blended the paragraph together. I accomplished this by adding transition words and changing the tense to fit the rest of the essay. In the conclusion, I completely started over. The original was bland, boring, and just plain repetitive. In the revised version, I outlined the essay, restated the thesis, and ended by suggestion other applications.
The first song played was from a genre that I had previously taken a test on, Sonata. The musicians played the song by the book. There were three movements and polyphonic texture. It was even fast and jerky. Nonetheless, this is the part where my rollercoaster was going down. In my opinion it was boring. Although very well played, the song itself did not interest me. I did not like the roadrunner, coyote essence of the song. The piano accompaniment would sometimes play the melody and let the clarinet follow and then they would switch. This to me seemed force instead of like the Sonatas that I listened to in class. However, apart from the musical aspect of the first piece there was a certain intensity expressed by the performers. I had never seen a
... presentation and added pictures to go with them. This was probably the longest part of the entire project. Then, I put animations in; I tried not to over exaggerate it. I got creative when it was time to put the music in. Society has a tune that is about society, as plain as it gets. With Advancements, came music that sounds futuristic. Which really goes with it. Spiritual was a tough decision. I could not determine between two songs. Comfort definitely had to be George Michael; he comforts everyone. Education is kind of based on a stereotype with the intelligent human beings being able to play piano. I absolutely had to use elevator music for simplicity. It does not get more simple than that! I enjoyed doing this project. I got to be creative but still be logical. Most fun project I have ever done honestly and I hope that future assigned projects are like this.
The majority of the pieces featured a rather slow steady beat, provided by the drum and the piano, while the other instruments (mainly the brass section) were used to play the main motif along with some minor ornamentations. The third song they played, one of my favorites, was simply a steady 4/4 tempo kept by the drum, with some minor variations. The saxophone and trumpets took turns drifting in and out to carry the melody. The saxophone player delivered an entertained solo which consisted of very light and amusing trills, this created a very soothing and relaxing
Moving on, I will talk about our ensemble’s most outstanding elements. As a whole, I thought our appearance was great, and that our band played reasonably well throughout the concert. I would say that our last two pieces were our best ones. I felt that compared to last concert, we had improved our quality of sound and our musicality. We had better dynamics, and we sounded more together. The least effective elements of our ensemble as whole, were probably the first two songs. Our biggest issues throughout our concert were that at times, we were too quiet, and also that when we had to jump up to play a higher note, we fell flat. Additionally, I felt that our musicality was not as apparent in the first two songs as it was in the last two. Our dynamics and articulation seemed a bit lacking, and certain instruments were overpowering others. Overall, our ensemble seemed to have improved greatly since our last concert.
Midnight is approaching. All of the forty hour week days and nights will soon pay off. But you can’t help to think that maybe, that one chord wasn’t right. You analyzed it, created new notes but you are beginning to feel differently. Even if you made the wrong choice, at least you won’t be the one to take the fall. Well, not publically. All of your hard work is given to the artist, but at the same time, they should receive the recognition instead of you. Seeing as a great deal had been their ideas. The anxiety was eating away at you even though you know their fanbase is a vigorous group. Maybe, just maybe this is your greatest record yet.
I noticed he constantly switched from the synthesizer to the keyboard, and this was to change the tune and make it sound layered as I mentioned before. I also noticed that at times he played the keyboard slowly and other times he would play extremely fast. So rapidly that I even questioned how a man can first not only move his arms so fast but also play so beautifully at such high speeds. A tune he played even sounded like a swish-swashing sound, and I was amazed by how a synthesizer and keyboard can possibly make such sounds. I also noticed that for this song that both Lionel Loueke and Dave Holland played the guitar, and I think this was to match the fusion electric instrument style. Overall, the entire band did a great opening for their performance; everyone looked like they were doing their own thing and were very content.
I feel very fortunate to have found my supervisor. She is so knowledgeable and generous with her knowledge. In our reading this week I believe my supervisor would be defined as expressive (Russell-Chapin, 2016). She is easy to talk to and she likes to hear about all of my concerns, including logistical issues. After the second week, she started to encourage me to come up with my own solutions. She no longer provided me with readings and long dialogues of what to do next, instead she would ask me what I thought. I truly enjoy these conversations and she guides me on a path to follow my own instincts and to trust my judgment.
Creating this project took a lot of strength and discipline and I was determined to complete it by keeping to a healthy lifestyle. I ate and slept well and if a circumstance arose that required my attention, I attended to it. The last thing I wanted to do was to stress my heart and mind out, figuratively and literally speaking. The Sound of Separation was the pinnacle of my self-healing. I matured and grew with the project and let go of negativity to make room for a better designer and a better me. Games are truly
I have learned several valuable things from this project experience. First, it’s okay to not know how to do something right away. Ask, observe and experiment. Doing so will greatly enhance my ability to do it correctly and continue to learn. Second, I learned that this can be an experience in frustration if I always try to not make waves. Sometimes waves need to be made to better the project. And third, watch for similar frustrations with my students and intervene before it gets too serious.
