For my service September learning hours I had the privilege to volunteer at Opportunity Village, specifically I helped with their HallOVeen event. This was their opening night and it was exciting getting to help out with all the other volunteers.
Before getting started on all the activities one of the directors greeted us and informed us about Opportunity Village. She stated that the main issue that this site was trying to address was helping those with learning disabilities better fit into our community. I was already informed of this prior to volunteering. I did work with kids and I learned that I can actually deal with them. I was in a position of authority and they actually listened to me, so I learned that I could possibly handle them in my future career too. I think this could help me professionally, because I want to be a dentist and I would have to learn how to deal with children. Although a child riding a slide and a child going to a dentist would be two completely different situations, I believe I can relate what I learned from handling the kids during this event in possibly future dental consultations. Personally I learned that I can have a lot of patience if I was in a situation where it was needed. Scholarly I did see a link between my volunteering site and my course assignments. I saw this seven year old boy who possessed the most polite manners I have ever witnessed. He was caring and patient while trying to get his little sister to slide down the slide with him. On the other hand a woman showed completely contrasting manners, she came up the slide with a drink and left it up stairs where no drinks were allowed. When I prompted her to take it downstairs with her, she replied with a no. I think that this shows how the environment definitely does have an effect on people, but at the end of the day both the child and the women had a choice. The boy could have been raised by great parents but he had a choice to treat his sister nicely. While the woman might have grown up with no one teaching her manners, but she had a choice to take the soda down with her when I politely asked her
Last semester, I planned my first outreach event at the church. We had bounce houses, face painting, food, games, and candy. I worked so hard to get this put together and even members of the church used their own money to purchase things to make this event happened. There was door to door evangelizing going on in the surrounding neighborhoods to get the word out, and there were only two people in the community that showed up. Two people.
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
Another service that I have done has been to volunteer at the West Campus Hospital gift shop. It was a great experience for me; if I had the time I would make the effort to volunteer again. For people that is good at socializing with others and love organizing I would recommend volunteering at the gift shop.
The Activity Center center has been around since 1955, it was founded during the civil rights movement. I learned that the Activity Center has been dedicated to help families for many years. Corey, one of the volunteers I met there, went to the Activity Center as a kid. The statement on the Activity center states, “For decades the Community Center has served neighboring families, youth, seniors, and the Lincoln community with inclusive ‘social, cultural, education, employment and welfare’ services.” The Community center has been a refuge to many African-American families who have needed financial support through out the years.
During my volunteering time at the childcare center I did a lot of hands on care with the children. I was placed in the toddler for majority of my time there. I was able to free play and dance with the children. In addition, I assisted them with their arts and crafts. For example, while I was there I helped the toddler make a paper bag puppet. Due to their developmental level, their ability to focus was limited which, caused me to contribute more to their project then what they did. I helped supervise the children while, they were outside playing. I was responsible for making sure that they were safe and played nicely with each other. Lastly, I help put the toddlers down for sleep during nap time.
The site I volunteered at was Cradles to Crayons in Boston, MA. This group provides children up to age 12 that are living in low income and homeless situations, with essential items they may not be able obtain otherwise. This includes clothes, shoes, school supplies, toys, books, and more. This helps these children at home, in school, and at play. Their overall mission since being founded in 2002 is to give children in need the most important basics of life. Their approach revolves around the idea of people helping other people. Better off communities are paired up with poor communities and those who have spare items donate them, and they are given to those in need.
I grew up in a small, close-minded, community that had insignificant minority people throughout it. I did not have a lot of experience with racial and ethnic groups. I did, however, have some experiences with children as well as adults who had learning disabilities as well as autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, and fetal alcohol syndrome. When I was in elementary school, I had a classmate who had down syndrome; she was in and out of our classroom periodically throughout the day. In junior high; I was a peer helper during leadership class and in high school, I was a peer helper. During high school, I also was a Special Olympic instructor which was very rewarding. Right now, I feel that I could someday handle the responsibility of meeting
I volunteered at Motivate Our Minds on Highland Dr. in Muncie, Indiana. There I assisted students from grades K-8 with homework and other club activities. The main role I serve is “mentor” or role model. We help the teachers get stuff ready for lesson, snack, and club activities. On a daily basis, we would sign in and separate into the two different classrooms K-4th and 5th-8th. They had different set-ups and I got the opportunity to work in both rooms. In the younger room, we would do homework to start out with and then they had a “tic-tac-toe” worksheet for different activities that the children could work through during the week. They then have a meeting they call “community circle”; where they discuss the things that could have gone better and the things that went great that day. By that time, it is time for the SVS volunteers to leave. In the older kid’s room, they start by doing homework, then they do a journal, and finally they do their different community activities. Slowly, both of the classrooms get released to get snack.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
Overall, I believe that this course has enhanced my writing. Previously, I never added an element of first person in my formal essays. I believe it was because in high school there was a bad connotation with it, but now I’ve learned that adding my own opinion enhances my essay and makes it more interesting and elaborate. I think it’s really useful to incorporate my own opinion throughout my essay to make it more personable and relatable. I’ve also found that the They Say, I Say book has helped me a lot in terms of structuring and formatting my thesis statements and topic sentences. This has majorly improved my writing and has allowed me to be more clear and concise with my ideas. Before, I always struggled with writing my thesis and topic sentences
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
While expressing a leadership role, I volunteered at Saint Charles Parish Hospital where I learned social skills, dedication, hard work, and a plan for my future.
During my community service hours I helped with running the rides during two events, HallOVeen and Magical Forest. The first time I helped with their new ride called “The Avalanche Slide”. A partner and I stood at the very top, awaited the herds of children to come, and then helped them safely get onto the slide. The second event did not divert much from the first as I also helped with running a ride, this time it was the Christmas train. The third time I volunteered I helped with transforming HallOVeen into Magical Forest. We were able to put up decorations to make the Christmas theme more festive.
This past week, a student was removed from the after-school program where I am a homework tutor. I chose this incident, since I am already getting accustomed to the number of students that are in the program, and now there is one less student. This student, “Rick”, goes to the program with his two sisters, and is often bickering with the younger sister. On the first day that I arrived to tutor, he hit his sister which caused her to cry and led to him being reprimanded by my supervisor. When this happened I was confused, and I felt out of place since I was in a new place. I was sitting at a separate table helping other students, so I also felt useless since I could not stop the incident from happening. I only go tutor on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
