For my service September learning hours I had the privilege to volunteer at Opportunity Village, specifically I helped with their HallOVeen event. This was their opening night and it was exciting getting to help out with all the other volunteers.
Before getting started on all the activities one of the directors greeted us and informed us about Opportunity Village. She stated that the main issue that this site was trying to address was helping those with learning disabilities better fit into our community. I was already informed of this prior to volunteering. Something I did not know though was the history of Opportunity Village and why they started this organization in the first place. I did work with kids and I learned that I can actually deal with them. I was in a position of authority and they actually listened to me, so I learned that I could possibly handle them in my future career too. I think this could help me professionally, because I want to be a dentist and I would have to learn how to deal with children. Although a child riding a slide and a child going to a dentist would be two completely different situations, I believe I can relate what I learned from handling the kids during this event in possibly future dental consultations. Personally I learned that I can have a lot of patience if I was in a situation where it was needed. Scholarly I did see a link between my volunteering site and my course assignments. I saw this seven year old boy who possessed the most polite manners I have ever witnessed. He was caring and patient while trying to get his little sister to slide down the slide with him. On the other hand a woman showed completely contrasting manners, she came up the slide with a drink and left it up stairs where no drinks were allowed. When I prompted her to take it downstairs with her, she replied with a no. I think that this shows how the environment definitely does have an effect on people, but at the end of the day both the child and the women had a choice. The boy could have been raised by great parents but he had a choice to treat his sister nicely. While the woman might have grown up with no one teaching her manners, but she had a choice to take the soda down with her when I politely asked her
