Meaningfulness of the Assignment This ethical autobiography forced me to take a look back on the origins, changes to, and current ethical and moral viewpoints. By examining the history of my life in regard to moral and ethical experiences and lessons, I had the ability to relearn what is important to me and the type of counselor I want to be. It also made me reassess and confirm why I want to be a counselor in the first place. Knowing that I will run into ethical dilemmas while counseling, just like in everyday life, I feel better equipped to draw on my past experiences, as well as new material, to help future clients. Assignment Contributes to Professional Development In working on this assignment, I was able to tackle very real ethical considerations as related to my future profession and specialization. Confidentiality, boundaries, transference, and multicultural considerations will be situations that I encounter on a regular basis. For far too long, individuals avoided help out of fear of being found out. Ethical and legal codes that have been put in to place protect the identity of this population, in order to encourage the pursuit and active participation in treatment. Another important point to make, is the emphasis placed on multicultural diversity and the implications of honoring and respecting this diversity in the counseling profession. Addiction is a disease that knows no race, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status. It does not discriminate amongst its victims. Through consideration of multicultural factors, the counseling profession is embracing the idea that help should be accessible, available, and most importantly, beneficial to all
