The term “literacy” can be defined in several ways. Dictionary.com simply states it as the ability to read and write, or the possession of education, knowledge in a specific subject or field. My definition of literacy, particularly pertaining to this essay, is the latter. My knowledge of diversity has always been quite limited, due to the fact that I grew up in a small town, village rather, not commonly found on any map of Ohio. During my first year of college here at the University of Cincinnati, I became very aware of just how diverse I was previously, and have accepted going away to be a full learning experience. My hometown, Glandorf, Ohio, is the perfect cookie cutter town that is every country music artist’s dream to sing about. Whether it be the fact that everybody knows everybody, word travels fast, or that there isn’t a soul on the street come Sunday morning, it holds true. In one year I have grown more literate in ways that I didn’t know I was able to. I have been introduced to city life, and in fact see myself living in or near one for the rest of my mine. There are so many different races, cultures, ethnicities, and lifestyles. I am surrounded by so many types of people as well. Everyone here has a story, mine being only a very tiny spec on the map, much like the town that shaped me. I have made many new friends who have introduced me to their own literacy that have molded mine into what it is now. Very quickly I learned that not everyone has parents that are still married, and that it’s not the end of the world when they aren’t. I learned that not everyone has the same religious beliefs as I do, as well as the same political views, and that’s okay.
