My Definition Of Identity

Identity is an ever changing, developing idea. Though there are many factors that shape one’s identity, the most influential are your family and peers, your morals and values, and the environment you are surrounded by. My definition of identity is the way you are perceived by others, and the way you see yourself. Though the definition of identity varies to each individual person, I see it as the way others feel about you, how you feel about yourself, and how that affects your interactions with you environment. This means that as you grow and develop, the people that surround you will play a major role in who you become. Also, the way you are raised affects how you feel about yourself- if you are raised with parents constantly telling you how wonderful you are, you will think that of yourself, but if you don’t have such an experience growing up, your self esteem will be lower. The way we act is dictated by our morals, and the way we act dictates our identity. For example, a person with looser morals may be the type to drink and party on the weekends. This can earn them a reputation of someone who is reckless, or doesn’t care about the consequences of their actions. This would be the identity by which your peers know you, while you may see yourself as a completely different person. If you are the type of person who values working hard and grades, you will obviously become the type of person who takes honors and AP classes and strives to be at the top of their class. The things you value will influence what you put your time and energy towards, therefore being an influential factor for your identity. Anything that you dedicate your life to will become a part of you. In my own experience, a dancer is who I’ve been since I was a toddler.
