What if people knew that public health exists everywhere around them and how much of an impact public health has on each person’s daily life? Public Health has really opened my eyes to a different perspective of health, I never knew that so many different aspects of health were possible. I have had my CNA since 2012, and my phlebotomy certification since 2017. Ever since my first job as a CNA, the experiences I have witnessed while working in a nursing home have made me realize that I wanted to be able to help people in some way pertaining to their health. Being able to make an impact in someone’s life, no matter how small or big is a rewarding feeling. Once I started my career path in Public Health I realized that this is something I really …show more content…
Of all the core disciplines epidemiology and health administration interest me the most, along with the core functions assessment and communication. Epidemiology, the study of disease and the application of this to control diseases is an interesting topic. Without disease and the research of them health would not exist. The core discipline of epidemiology plays a huge role in public health. Public health is preventing disease, prolonging life and informing the community about healthy habits. All of these things revolve around epidemiology as well. Without the study and research of disease humans would have become infected with differently deadly diseases and would most likely cease to exist. Health administration also interests me because without people in charge of the many different functions of health and hospitals health care would not be possible. Those in health administration roles keep things running smoothly and keep everything in order for public health to continue to help people be healthy and informed. Assessment and communication are two of public health’s core functions. Assessment figures out what the problems of a specific public health issue are. Monitoring health, diagnosing and investigating are components of assessment. Assessment goes hand in hand with epidemiology. Communication spreads information about specific public health issues. Research is a big part of communication which is interesting to me. Communication really plays a small part in every role of the public health conceptual model. Educating people on diseases comes from being able to have communication skills, which is why this core function draws me to it. Communication is a big part in public health, sharing information and research can help others in many different
After being lost, puzzled, and indecisive for a while now about which health-related career I desire the most, I finally made up my mind and selected a major. I decided to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science after accomplishing an Associate’s Degree in Science, which is an open field filled with opportunities for several health professions. I realized that a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science is the way to go as it enables me to switch back and forth between all of the health occupations that I worship. Down the road, I can even further my education and specialize in a specific domain that I am willing to commit to. In general, Health Science is a major where professionals undergo several tasks such as improving their community’s health and overall wellbeing, get involved in nutrition related conditions, use epidemiological techniques, counteract various infections, and enrich physical and daily health routines.
You made some great points in your discussion post. I really liked that you talked about nurses being in a position to change people’s lives. That is exactly why I wanted to become a nurse to help others and make a difference at the same time. In our careers as nurses we will be around the public all day long. To me this is what makes us all public health nurses. Shearer (2014) reminds us that, “As nurses, we have power because of the trust the public puts in us”. This statement hit home to me because I had never really thought about nursing in that context until now. Patients come to us vulnerable, sick, and wanting help. By educating, advocating, and planning interventions for our patients we can help promote their way of life. We’re so much
As a young girl I always knew that in my future I would go into a career that consisted of helping others. I also knew that I wanted to have a career in the medical field. When I put the two together and after researching different careers in the medical field, I knew being a physician’s assistant was the best fit for me. Not only would I be able to work helping others but I would be in the field that in my eyes is the best field to be in.
Public health expert, C.E.A. Winslow, defined public health as "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals”. Just like many other words or subjects, the definition of public health can vary from person to person, or even from place to place. However, no matter what definition you stumble upon, they will all have something in common; helping individuals, communities, and the population as a whole. Public health has always been, and will always be, about helping people – and that is my passion, as well.
Right from my High school days I had a strong inclination to various programmes/ activities in health sector. My Interest in the subject has grown as it refers to "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals which is concerned with threats to health. I have come to terms with the fact that there is an enormous proportion of subject to be assimilated; to focus on public health intervention to improve health and quality of life through prevention and treatment of disease and other physical and mental health conditions. Therefore I want to take up a vital role in disease prevention efforts in both the developing world and in developed countries.
My future plans include graduating high school, going to college and getting a master’s degree in Nursing. The career I chose is Nurse Practitioner also known as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). To my knowledge Nurse Practitioner includes checking up on patients, prescribing medication, order treatments, and informing patients. The workplace would be fast paced and fast decisions have to made. You are entrusted daily with the lives of patients and can range from situations such as flu to more complicated like providing care to patients in the extensive care unit. To be a Nurse Practitioner I know you will need to form a tough mindset to be prepared for anything and act accordingly to the situation present.
Many epidemiologists usually specialize in one or more of the following specific fields, substance abuse, bioterrorism, injury, chronic disease, or infectious disease. Even though there are different areas of epidemiology that are available, they all
Education is neither linear nor static. It requires evolution and fluctuations. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at UNC Charlotte, and now it is time for a prime conversion to be made. Attending the Masters of Public Health program at UNC Charlotte would open the door for me to pursue my career aspirations in health care. Specifically, I am interested in epidemiological methods in community health. My ambition, perseverance, and work ethic have brought me to a high point, and enrolling in the Masters in Public Health program would raise that threshold even higher.
When I first started college, my view of a health care professional was a transparent overview of the field and their duties. I knew what they did, but at that time I didn’t understand why. Becoming a health educator is easier said than done, and with the knowledge comes a great responsibility. Health education as defined by the World Health Organization is “the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health’. That is noteworthy, yet at the same time, a very board definition. I define health educators as a guardian of the unmindful, meaning as a health educator, you are responsible for the knowledge of your community and expanding their mind set.
I made the decision to join the health care field based on my own desire, love of the people that live and thrive around me, and to be a role model for my daughter. I feel it is important to have a goal in life, and it is important to me to show my daughter the value of goals, and achieving them as well. I love meeting new people, and being able to lend a helping hand in any way I possibly can. What better way to help the general population then to have a profession in the health care industry.
I have chosen Public Health as my career path because I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. Also, I chose healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness. Moreover, Public Health is a challenging, diverse and dynamic field. My philosophy of health is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities and the population. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public
Educating the public to recognize the signs and dangers of myocardial infarctions could lead to earlier interventions and prevent life endangering delays. Furthermore, the ability to afford medical procedures is a huge barrier for many of the patients. As a result, life threatening delays often occurred because of considerations for the cost of the procedures. It became clear that meeting the health needs of the public took more than education; it would also take an interdisciplinary effort to eliminate health inequities resulting from disparities in income, social status, education, employment, social and physical work environments. However, all I had were raw ideas. It was clear to me that I would need the formalization of a public health education to obtain the skills needed to actualize my
Even though I initially started my journey in public health after graduating from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, I acknowledged my interest and enthusiasm when I was working on my research thesis during the final year of my college. I conducted a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching program to control hypertension among adults residing in selected rural areas of Bangalore in India. It happened to be my first exposure to the field of public health where I had an opportunity to interact with Bangalore’s slum-dwellers and witness their lifestyle, their access to the basic needs such as water, sanitation, and essential nutrients which raised a serious concern on my mind. Upon completion of the research,
Frieden establishes the fundamentals of success. These components that are innovation, communication, technical package, management, and political commitment create a web for Public Health. By utilizing this over everyday lives. These programs can target anything from micro issue to epidemics. This educational tool focuses on building a system that challenges normative ideas and helps identify new strategies. This ultimately relates in a creating an ecosystem of new ground rules that every Public Health official should use. Dr. Frieden did a great job on explaining what is next in educating and
How will a master’s degree in public health help prepare you to address these problems?
