My Career As A Nurse Practitioner

My future plans include graduating high school, going to college and getting a master’s degree in Nursing. The career I chose is Nurse Practitioner also known as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). To my knowledge Nurse Practitioner includes checking up on patients, prescribing medication, order treatments, and informing patients. The workplace would be fast paced and fast decisions have to made. You are entrusted daily with the lives of patients and can range from situations such as flu to more complicated like providing care to patients in the extensive care unit. The career was brought up as there was a shortage in doctors in the mid 1960s so in desperate need the government and the Health board opened opportunities for skilled nurses who had plenty of experience in the field. and to become a doctor students needed an extensive amount of education for the profession which requires time and money something many people did not have. Nurse Practitioners can take the job of a doctor when needed and can open an office of their own. NP’s provide the same care a doctor can give but the difference is that the education level required is less and NP’s acquire their career growth through experience and practice. (5 Qualities…) According to AANP, a Nurse Practitioners job is to provide and coordinate care for patients as well as prescribe medications or treatments. (AANP) They are specialized in acute care to long term health care. NP’s provide care to a patient age span of premature babies to the elderly providing treatment for their specific need. NP’s are to manage blood pressure, provide immunizations, prescribe treatments, order lab tests and inform the patient of how to live a healthier and better quality of life according to their specific health needs.
