Film Analysis of My Best Friend’s Wedding
My Best Friend’s Wedding is a romantic comedy about a woman who realizes she is in love with her best friend just as he is about to marry someone else. This movie is filled with great examples of what to do--and more often--what not to do in relationships. In this paper, we will look at several communication techniques and terms and how they relate to this movie and are used throughout the film.

Without Cross-Sex Friendship this movie truly could never have been made. The movie is based on two cross-sex friends, one of whom falls in love with the other. Without this kind of friendship, there would not have been a storyline to be followed. There are two different kinds of cross-sex friendships that are emphasized throughout this movie. The first would be the obvious one of Julianne and Michael and their complicated partially platonic, but, still with sexual tension relationship, and the second would be Julianne and her homosexual friend George. Because George is homosexual their relationship is entirely platonic and he lends her support throughout the entirety of the movie. Julianne experiences both of the main two types of cross-sex friendships in this movie and almost ends up destroying her relationship with Michael entirely. While Julianne did not completely dissolve her relationship with Michael, her actions and his final decision change their type of cross-sex friendship entirely. They move from being flirtatious best friends to simply good platonic friends. This movie is almost proving that men and women cannot have platonic friendships if they are both heterosexual.
