Generally, when a person decides to follow a profession such as teaching, there is usually a strong motivation behind that decision. This is not only a positive aspect but also a necessary feature in this particular profession. A teacher is more than a person who stands at the front of a classroom and divulges facts and figures, they are, and should be, one who inspires and nurtures curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge in their students. They often act as a role model, an inspiration, a guide, and many other things to learners of all ages throughout the world. My ideal teacher self is one who fulfills the aforementioned qualities and in addition is understanding, effective and relatable. A teacher must be understanding in the sense that they must put themselves in the shoes of their students, when students misbehave, when they fail to do their work, for example, a teacher must evaluate and try to understand the reasons for these things. Once this happens, the problem can begin to be addressed and hopefully rectified. Understanding is about being patient, listening, and being thoughtful about our actions and decisions. Another quality, and perhaps one of the most fundamental elements to possess as a teacher, is a high level of effectiveness. As a teacher one of my highest priorities is to be effective, meaning that not only do I want to present information and provide structure in the classroom, but I want my students to learn and have the desire to continue to learn. Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher. One of the most important skills that are necessary to be an outstanding teacher is getting to know the whole child/student in your classroom. It's vital that every student feels valued and a sense of belonging in the classroom and that comes from a teacher that is kind, encouraging, caring, respectful and passionate about learning and teaching. When a teacher carries those attributes, he or she is able to engage all students in discourse and instruction.
In Jeremy Polk’s article, Traits of Effective Teachers, he mentions ten characteristics of effective teachers. Those ten traits are, “good prior academic performance, communication skills, creativity, professionalism, pedagogical knowledge, thorough and appropriate student evaluation and assessment, lifelong learning, personality, content area knowledge, and the ability to model concepts in their content area” (Polk, 2006). Polk understands that these are not the only traits that effective teachers will showcase, but it is the start to a list of highly important qualities (Polk, 2006).
The movie "October Sky" gives a very positive representation of a teacher. She is a role model, a friend, a source of information, a defender, and a fighter. She is portrayed as compassionate, understanding, and very beneficial in keeping the students directed toward their goals. This would seem to say that teachers need these qualities in order to fully relate to their students. A teacher can not only be there for informational needs, but must also stand behind her students and be prepared to defend their rights to discover themselves.
This semester I had to complete two goals if I was to continue on my journey to become a teacher. The first was that I needed to spend a total of fifteen hours observing a teacher during their instruction period, and the second was that I needed to choose the level or grade on which I planned to focus on during my own career. The staff and administration at Riverhills Elementary International Baccalaureate Magnet School, where I completed all my observational hours, were so accommodating and inspiring that I was able to easily attain both of my goals and feel great while doing so.
There are many reasons people decide to enter the teaching field. Some enter because they enjoy working with people or children, others because they like being off during the summer months, and still others because of their love for a particular subject. Although all these reasons are valid, I feel my reasons are much simpler. The bottom line is that I love kids and enjoy working with them. My desire to make learning a more positive experience for them has only increased with time.
Now that I have told you what has led me to this decision I would like to tell you exactly why I have chosen to become a teacher. I want to become a teacher not because of the salary nor because I want weekends and holidays off; rather, I want to become a teacher because I truly have a passion for making a difference in others lives. I feel that teaching is perhaps one of the most fulfilling roles in life. Becoming a teacher to me means helping to shape another person by teaching and instructing them.
My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. I aspire to see a student’s ability to grasp the knowledge they never before understood. I aspire to see a student succeed at something they never thought they ever could. I aspire to not only support students with academic skills, but also with life lessons about the value of community, pride in one’s own ethnicity, good citizenship, sportsmanship, and more. According to Harmer (2007: 24) there is not an ideal personality, but that has to do with teachers’ attitude and reactions towards events that occur during the lesson. Therefore, the best point to consider in teachers’ personality would be demonstrating a positive attitude and their responses while taking decisions during the class that is what students see at that moment. From their adaptability, we can take into consideration two points while describing good teachers which are, as Harmer (2007: 25) discusses, the flexibility and the ability to take advantage of every single event in their favor so that help them to succeed. Harmer also agrees that good teachers have to encourage students’ motivation and to respect the learner, because creating a good relationship in the class is a proof of upright rapport in the lesson. Scrivener (2005: 24) agrees that good teachers have to create an atmosphere where the empathy and the authenticity are effective to complement the rapport in a lesson, besides, Scrivener (2005: 23) states that good teachers are sensitive, confident, responsible and understanding. An ideal teacher is the one we respect from our heart. He/she acts as a guide to the students, while not pushing them too much. Such a perfect motivates them and boosts their morale. He/she tries to encourage the students and refrains from criticizing them.
To be compassionate about what their students are dealing with outside of school. Take the time to sit down with the student and talk to them, if there is an issue. Even though, the teacher and students schedules get occupied with the amount of work that needs to get done. There is still a way to reach out to a student or teacher if one of them is determined to do it can happen. Nowadays, it is easy to communicate between them both, so there should not be an excuse about not having the proper communication. Then, respect develops more between them. The teacher gives a clear act of respect toward the teacher; therefore, the student does the same for the teacher. There should not be special treatment or anything like that at all. All of these factors mentioned are descriptions of an effective teacher and good qualities that they must express while entering into the teaching profession; that is what makes a teacher
As we reminisce and reflect back either on our childhood or academic career, we tend to have that one teacher who was memorable to us in some way - for their sense of humor, their stellar personality, or perhaps having that charisma and charm no other teacher had to make a difficult subject and it 's concepts fun to learn. While knowledge is power, I firmly believe that it is rather the exchange and distribution of knowledge that is power. When one can educate the masses there is no doubt that together we can accomplish great things. Becoming a teacher would mean the opportunity to be able to witness the shaping and molding of the minds of the future generations and the satisfaction knowing that you have helped your students set themselves onto the right path and provide guidance towards the creation of a better tomorrow. Choosing to become a teacher will allow me not only to educate my students, but also educate myself to be a better teacher throughout my career. Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
One quality that would make me a good teacher is, I am good with kids. I believe a teacher needs to be able to care for the children they are teaching. Also, you should be ecstatic about being able to be an influence on their lives. I like working with kids and like to help them understand things they may not know. When I was in Middle School we did a thing called “Study Buddies.” We would go to the classrooms everyday for the last few periods of the day and help kids read and do their homework. I worked with three kids everyday and they were so genuine and appreciative.
There have been many factors that have inspired me to this career choice. Watching my teachers, both past and present, has inspired me to become a teacher. I have a genuine interest in lifelong learning and as such I have the desire to not only instil knowledge and values to others, but also encourage them to share my passion for learning. Social Justice and leadership roles at school, along with my extra-curricular involvement with Cowra Youth Council, have highlighted my ability to work with and for the benefit of young people. In essence I know that my abilities and aspirations will make me a good teacher.

A teacher is a person who provides education for pupils (children), or students (adults) using lectures, audiovisual aids, demonstrations, and computers to present academic, social, and motor skills. Teachers can also teach foreign languages, art, kids with special needs, and P.E. Teaching has changed a lot compared to the traditional methods of just lectures and textbooks. Students now are encouraged to actively learn through groups or individual projects. They have learning games, debates, and experiments to help them through the learning process. Being a teacher would be a great career for anyone who wants to further themselves, to help people, and to have great benefits (chronicle guidance publications).
