Muskingum County Children Services (2017), defines emotional abuse as “Consistent and ongoing negative interaction between a caregiver and a child such as constant and undue criticism, verbal abuse, ignoring the mental needs of a child, and other forms of rejection”. According to Richard Skerritt (2016), verbal abuse is caused by an underlying issue such as a mental health disorder. There are some facilities that can help with those affected with verbal abuse. One of them is the Muskingum County Children Services center. They are a center that can help with these kind of situations but is mainly for children. Their goal is to prevent or reduce conditions causing endangerment to adults through provision of services appropriate to the adult's needs, this could be counseling or even help with financial needs. …show more content…

By doing such the adult can take of themselves and children in a safe and more effective way. The last goal they have is to prevent unnecessary institutionalization and to enable the adult to stay in their home as long as possible. An acronym used that can help to detect and report verbal abuse is SPEAK UP, this stands for sudden changes in behavior or finances. Signs of verbal abuse include: extreme withdrawal, depression, anxiety, absence of basic care or necessities, being kept away from others, and unsanitary living conditions. If you notice any of these signs it is your duty to report it. You can report any of these signs of verbal abuse by telephone, in person, or through a written statement. It is important to report these kind of actions happening before a person tries to harm themselves or others. This can affect a person's mental stability.
