Impact of Technology on Music The introduction to the internet in the early nineties and the creation of broadband, MP3, and the file sharing network known as “peer to peer” has completely revolutionised the music industry. A large percentage of music is today downloaded over the internet, and not bought over the counter in a record store. This essay will address the impact of new technology on music, and how music is distributed. To do this, the paper will first briefly explain the history of the digital revolution. Then it will contrast the problems and the possibilities this technology has created.

People have been finding alternative ways to access their music since technology evolved, whether it was recording songs off the radio onto a cassette tape or borrowing your friend’s CD in order to ‘burn’ it, No one played by the rules, legally. This piece will discuss illegally downloading music and the political theories and concepts it represents. What are the social norms and attitudes that drive this behaviour? and what is the solution, if there is one? Since early in the 1990's, software publishers have been concerned about their losses from software piracy.
I don’t know about you but I’m all for the online music sharing. I’m for it simply because I am one who doesn’t have a lot of time to go review and listen to cd’s to hear their potential. I am a very busy person, and I am always on the run so I don’t have the time to go to the record store and buy whole cd’s or the singles which is one of the pros of online music sharing. Online sharing is an excellent way to preview music before one would decide to buy it because if there aren’t any songs that aren’t liked by the listener then they would decide to buy the single and not waste money buying a whole album of an artist that they wouldn’t like. But that factor is frowned upon by the music industry.
This system takes money away from creators and designers and gives it to the advertisers on pirating websites. There are two reasons that people pirate media: either the content they want is too expensive, or more likely, the content they want is unavailable or too hard to obtain. Often pirating is not a malicious act, but simply an easy way for users to gain access to things that Hollywood has made difficult to acquire. An example of this being the popular HBO series, “Game of Thrones.” For a long time, fans of this show were unable to buy the show’s first season because it was not on popular paid services including Netflix, iTunes, and Amazon. However, the first season was available to be downloaded for free on multiple pirating websites.

Practical Solutions for the Time Being What had also been introduced are technological solutions. Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies repress users when a new computer has been purchased, limiting the times of software installations, or limiting how many devices on which a song could be used (Upshaw & Babin, 2010). Digital rights management (DRM) technology is specifically geared to prevent you from using the original material, whether it is music, film or e-book on more than one device (Zimerman, 2011). But still entails much more improvement in order to become effective at fighting online piracy because of the pirates that always find other ways and bypass it. Few published studies have dealt with specific product incentives that encourage legal commerce over piracy.
Online piracy is being a threat to the business of the music, movie, and software industries. The focus of this paper is in the music, software, and e-book industries. Importance of Online Piracy to the Field of International Management The problem with online piracy is that companies are being affected by it and billions of dollars in revenue are lost (Upshaw and Babin, 2010).
