MUSIC THROUGH DECADES

Since centuries ago, music has always been a fundamental part of the way of living of different societies. It has been a way in which different cultures or social groups have demonstrate their traditions, culture and the way they feel and think in the environment where they exist.

Along human history, music has presented several branches, which have led to an enormous variety of genres. We can start talking about the music in the decade of the 50s, which was best known for its “Rock & Roll” content. This genre was influenced by rhythm and gospel, blues, and country music. This was known as alternative rock, which is defined by the website Difference Between as “an umbrella term that encompasses a number of different sub-genres such as indie rock and grunge.” The main difference between the two previous genres and this one, is that the decades of the 50s and 70s were more focused on dancing and showing people the happiness you can project throughout this actions; and the alternative rock is more focused on projecting beautiful and peaceful melodies shown at small pubs or bars.

Unfortunately, music nowadays has lost its ability of providing meaningful and significant feelings throughout its lyrics. One of the mainly reasons that is provoking this phenomenon is globalization, causing that music industries generate “publicly artists”, which only create music to promote films or brands using catchy melodies. This has caused popular themes of music to only talk about sex, drugs, money, and “love”.

Based on this situation, we can say that music in the next years will be focused on the social and political problems that our world has been and will continue facing along the next decades. Even though there is still hope of changing the actual situation, a lot of time will be needed for making this possible, and before that happens, society will continue expressing their feelings and opinions through the music lyrics and
