Music is a way of expression. A way to convey thoughts and feelings while getting a message or messages across. I grew up in the Baptist church singing gospel and Christian music in the choir, but I also became interested in hip-hop and R&B music over the past decade. Typically, some people say those genres cannot mix with our lifestyles of today and that might be true. However, the way hip-hop has been used in recent years makes me and others wonder about how it is affecting the people of the world.

As with most things, over the years they change or evolve to something broader and it is no different with gospel music. While most African American churches have stayed with the traditional music and hymns, we also have gospel artist such as Kirk Franklin or Hezekiah Walker producing music. Through generations, this music has changed so much that it not only attracts an audience but it can also change the way that today’s youth think. I do like hip-hop music but only for the beat. Often I have been asked for the words to a song or who is the artist singing. It is amazing that I know the beat or tune but am unable to figure out the words or who the artist is.
Gospel music has a way of bringing together an audience of multiple generations, while still having a common interest. Having been to a few Baptist conventions across the country, I have seen it happen firsthand. Despite what you believe the answer to be, African American Religious music will continually evolve. Since Thomas Dorsey first stretched the boundaries to create gospel music, choirs, quartets, and power vocalists have been singing the same song, albeit in different styles and places. As African American religious music continues to grow beyond even Dorsey’s expectations, one can only hope that it will be embraced regardless of how it is labeled by everyone who needs to be reminded of the good news it represents.

There are many things I like about hip-hop. Including the beat, artists, and the big variety of voice styles. I love how most hip-hop songs have fast and upbeat tempos. It really makes me enjoy the music more. Also, a lot of artists include different meanings in their songs. Some may have been written when they were feeling down, energetic, or excited. I really enjoy how the different artists all have different voice styles. Some sing better than others but I like that.
Hip hop culture has been around since the 1970s. Multiple sources all come down to the South Bronx in New York City, as the origin of hip hop culture. The culture began to take its shape within the African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Latino communities. The father of the start of this culture was a Jamaican-born DJ named Clive Campbell but also known as DJ Kool Herc. He brought forth a new sound system and the Jamaican style of “toasting.” Toasting was when Jamaicans would talk or rap over the music they played. This whole new style soon brought what is now known as DJs, B-Boys, MC’s, and graffiti artists (Kaminski).
