Music is a way of expression. A way to convey thoughts and feelings while getting a message or messages across. I grew up in the Baptist church singing gospel and Christian music in the choir, but I also became interested in hip-hop and R&B music over the past decade. Typically, some people say those genres cannot mix with our lifestyles of today and that might be true. However, the way hip-hop has been used in recent years makes me and others wonder about how it is affecting the people of the world.

As with most things, over the years they change or evolve to something broader and it is no different with gospel music. While most African American churches have stayed with the traditional music and hymns, we also have gospel artist such as Kirk Franklin or Hezekiah Walker producing music. Through generations, this music has changed so much that it not only attracts an audience but it can also change the way that today’s youth think. I do like hip-hop music but only for the beat. Often I have been asked for the words to a song or who is the artist singing. It is amazing that I know the beat or tune but am unable to figure out the words or who the artist is.
Gospel music has a way of bringing together an audience of multiple generations, while still having a common interest. Having been to a few Baptist conventions across the country, I have seen it happen firsthand. Particularly once a year in June, a convention organized for youth from communities all over the country come together in one city and are ministered to from preachers from around the country.
