Introduction
What is literature? There is no exact answer. Literature has multifariousness. At its core, literature is the application of linguistic process. Carter and McRae (2001, p. 10) recommend using literature to help students go beyond “acquiring basic knowledge of the language” to “learning about the language and how it Works” because using literature can help develop the “fourth” skill in language. Literature offers a great opportunity to expand and enrich communication skills. But shaping just what literature is becomes a more complicated medical prognosis. While commonly thought of as novels, poetry, and sometimes dramatic event, the nature of literature itself is debatable. Language is the ability to acquire and use communication. Language can be faulting into two parts, how we understand speech (receptive language) and how we use language to limit ourselves (Productive/ Expressive language).
Numerous early adolescence educators feel it is critical to mix content territory reading and literacy in the essential evaluations. 18). So Literature performs a vital use in teaching 4 simpleton linguistic process skills like analyzing, writing, listening and speaking. But, while the use of literature in the language classroom, skill have to in no way learn in isolation but in an incorporated manner teachers ought to attempt to teach primary language skills as a critical a part of oral and written language use, as part of the manner of growing both referential and interactional that means, no longer honestly as a problem of the oral and written production of phrases, phrases, and
As a precursor, the common understanding needs to be reached that: literature is an art, and has many mediums. Medium is the material or technique with which an artist works (Dictionary.com), for example: photographs, pastels, canvas, paper, ink, etc... There are technical, recreational, and otherwise artistic uses for all mediums. A small child taking pictures of a puppy with a disposable camera, a reporter taking precise pictures of a sporting event, and an artist taking close-up pictures of the dew as it drips off a tree are all different uses of the same medium in photography. Literature can be created with many different intentions and reasons, but the attempt to determine that something is not art based off of the motivation or intentions of the artist is quit meaningless.
Literature throughout history has evolved due to events occurring during those times. It has changed in a deductive fashion going from creator to creation. In the early times Native Americans wrote myths of how the world had been created, next Puritans wrote of the drama in their communities and how they affected with each other, finally, transcendentalism focused on a singular person's ideas and point of view. It is important to be able to understand all levels of life from broad ideas to a singular person. Understanding not only how the world works but also how to get along with others and who you are as a person is crucial in this society. Literature from many time periods all attribute to these subjects. Literature
Literature is the use of language and words in order to communicate thoughts and ideas. Literature is important because it helps us connect and relate to one another by typically gearing itself around permanent and universalizing themes or interest. Additionally, it is important because through works of literature such as the national anthem all citizens of society are unified regardless of race, ethnicity, or social economic status. Other types of literature which are also admired in modern society include, poetry, novels, essays, and films. These different styles of literature are often seen as forms of art just as any other piece of literature, which have a variety of uses including education or entertainment. Through many of these pieces of arts you will find themes which are of interest around the world; these themes can be understood and be related to by nearly all the people in the world. Some of the themes instilled in literature include, “Beauty of simplicity, Everlasting love, Loss of innocence, Materialism as downfall, and the power of wealth”.
Literature functions as a reflection of society and a creator of cultural ideas. Throughout the existence of the human race, literature has played a vital role in the distribution of ideas and as a way of communication. Literature can be used in many ways, whether it be to explain, persuade, or inform.
In short, Literature is an expression of individual thoughts and feelings achieved through our unique creativity.
My perception of literature is anything written by an author for the consumption of an audience. By my own definition literature should include literary works from throughout the ages, but for some reason the word literature conjures up images of “Dante’s Inferno”, “Romeo, and Juliet”, and “Gone with the Wind”. After reading how literature is described in “The Norton Introduction to Literature”, I gained a deeper view of what literature is. There are many forms of literature including oral literature, graphic novels, and comic strips. Critically thinking about literature is important to the world because it allows you to explore a story from the point of view of the writer. When not just reading, but thinking about what you read you can gain
In creating a novel, the author must at least know the concept and ideas on literature in order to have a ideas regarding to narrative writing. As we all know, literature can be found everywhere when it comes to regular activities. In fact, Literature is used in our daily basis therefore literature is part of our life no matter what. When studying history, books, documents, and files are used. Those forms are the exact literature itself, it contains in any sorts of languages which contain letters and numbers. Other sorts of symbols are considered to be literature itself. Poems, declamation, oratorical are a form of literature. Pieces, symphony, and movements are also a form of literature to musicians in order for them to understand the very concept of music itself. Painting, drawing, and sketching are also forms of literature which is a language that is only understood by artists and critics.
Literature is very intrinsic in society today like it has always been. The importance of literature is immeasurable. Breanna Sahr states, “Literature connects individuals with larger truths and ideas in a society.” Literature is not only pleasurable and entertaining, it also helps with expanding the mind to new ideas. Many great leaders in history have used and referenced literature to rise up in the world and become the great men and women we remember today. Much of the famous and inspiring texts that are studied today were written by great leaders such as Plato and Marcus Aurelius. Other great texts in literature were written by “nobodies” who were not known very well within society such as Emily Dickinson and Dante. The stories and other
Some people are unaware of what literature really means. Literature is referring to something that deals with a body of written works; within poems, plays and novels. Literature is used to explore human experiences in all possibilities. It is something that deals with our most apprehensiveness such as death, family, religion, good and evil, character, courage, and more. “While the information is represented in abstract form and generalized: facts, statistics, and data” (Gillespie, 20). It offers a different type of learning than just collecting information by, requiring us to experience things and participate. When looking for literature in stories you want to look for irony, symbolism, the theme, setting, main characters and supporting characters.
How do we begin to define an immense subject such as literature? We may refer to dictionaries and find scholars explaining literature simply as any written piece of work, but those definitions do not even begin to scratch the surface of what this entity we call literature truly is. In order to understand the true concept of it you must delve into it yourself. Personally, after reading many novels, stories, and poems, I have come to the realization that literature is not just a boring subject we study in school. Through many stories and the work of Northrop Frye, I have realized how literature has no boundaries because it is built by human imagination and anything can be broken down, even time, by imagination (Frye 80). Literature has allowed me to travel countless miles, experience catastrophic events, and feel a
Literature is a very powerful tool that is used to make a huge impact on society or in someone’s perspective. Literature comes in different forms and each literature form fits in a certain category or role to help understand the true meaning of it. From playwrights to short stories, each one has moral lesson, a message or a reflection of the author. I have witnessed the power of literature several times. Literature has moved teens to better being; it has motivated unfortunate people to fame, used as an educational process of teaching and most of all, entertainment. Back in the day, plays were on of the most famous forms of entertainment. Without television and radio present, plays served as a substitute to entertain certain groups of people like the royal family or just for the whole public. This was one way of making money by the actors and the authors that wrote the play. Also present during those times were the poem recitals. This is similar to a play but fewer people are present in the stage or sometimes solo performance. Today, Literature is still being used as a form of entertainment and educational intentions. Hollywood made a lot of money by revising the great masterpieces of famous authors such as “Rome and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. Also, they made movies out of hundreds of literary works for educational purposes and better understanding of the literature piece. Each form of literature has its own style. The style determines how it influences the audience to absorb the true meaning and moral of the story or poem. William Shakespeare and Benjamin Franklin were truly persuasive while Washington Irving and Edgar Allan Poe mixed mystery and adventure to their works. The style touches the readers which really makes a good relationship from the reader to the author’s literary masterpieces.
Literature is a body of written works. The name has traditionally been applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. The art of literature is not reducible to the words on the page; they are there solely because of the craft of writing. As an art, literature might be described as the organization of words to give pleasure. Yet through words literature elevates and transforms experience beyond “mere” pleasure. Literature also functions more broadly in society as a means of both criticizing and affirming cultural values. It not only portrays the imitation of human action but also serves as a corrective mirror
Literature is creative writing of recognized artistic value. Literature represents the very best of human expression. We read and celebrate Literature for many reasons. A few of these reasons are,- to be inspired, to be delighted, to embark on incredible ventures and others.
Literature is an essential part of society in the present day and enables the communication between multiple parties in a written form. Texts can provide a vast knowledge on subjects dependent on content whereas novels are often seen as being purely for leisure and enjoyment. However it can often be seen that prose
Literature has many meanings but to me when I hear the word literature I think of large tomes of words and stories that have become classics over time however this is only one definition of literature. Literature comes from that Latin word littera, that directly translated means letter, thus supporting the idea that literature is written. This view however leaves out the idea that there can be oral literature as well from which many of our stories and books come from.
