Since this paper is going to demonstrate the key role of multicultural competency for businesses in today’s world, it is essential to understand the meaning and concept of this specific term. In a simple word, multicultural competence is the ability to understand, appreciate and interact with people from different cultures and different belief systems. To be more specific, this term is not something we have or do not have. It is a process of learning about and becoming allies with people from other culture, therefore we will be able to participate in a multicultural process and interact with people around the world. The amalgamation of the two companies produced an industrial giant with global sales of more than $150 billion, making it fifth among the world’s car manufacturers (Sarosi – 2016). At first, this merge was a great example of globalization that how two companies can conquer the whole market after merging process. They expected that this merger will allow them to meet the demand of all segments of car markets and as a result, there will be a significant boost in their sales. The main reason is, integration of cultures between companies. Obviously differences would always be there but the merging companies should have an integration plan right from the due diligence (Ranjan 2012). Some of the issues that need to be address to make cross-cultural merger a successful one can be, not loss of identity meaning that all employees should be treated with dignity and respect. Simply they have to feel proud being member of new company. This is something that Daimler and Chrysler didn’t pay attention to it and most employees became demotivate. As well as this, communication style plays an important role in this process. Just like how Daimler and Chrysler failed to consider this factor, Shell and Royal Dutch petroleum were successfully organized set of systems that can make the communication of two cultures easier. In this way both employees and managers can communicate better and as a result, the outcome will be productive and effective. As well as this, examples used in this paper was in depth analyse of “partnership and trust (Shell – Royal Dutch petroleum) vs. power and domination (Shell – Royal Dutch petroleum)”. These are two ways of either having successful or fail merge as a company that fall under the concept of multicultural competency. Since nowadays companies are looking to work internationally and expand their markets, understanding this concept will help them to be successful
