Upon viewing “Mrs. Dalloway” I was not impressed. The movie seemed to jump from the present to the past. The character Septimus didn’t appear to have any purpose in the storyline. Clarrisa also seemed to be tightly bound by the Victorian lifestyle of the day to make her interesting to me. The plot just seemed too hard to follow. This movie must have been for people that look for meaning deeper than I.
I believe that Mrs. Dalloway was fixed on the past. For one thing, the audience never saw Clarissa Dalloway think about the future; she always went back to the past. Every time she stopped to think about something it was of the past, for example; the flashback of the night of boating, and Septimus’ delusional thoughts of World War I. I think her one true love was Peter. I think she married Mr. Dalloway because she was scared to admit that she loved Peter in more than a "brotherly way." When she was older and seeing Peter at the party, I think she regretted not marrying Peter. Perhaps the movie would have been more interesting if Clarissa would have been more free spirited like Peter or Sally.
Septimus did not have a well defined role in the film. He was constantly reliving his days in the war, and appearing to everyone that insanity has become him. His purpose was unclear, the story just jumped from Clarissa to Septimus. Whether he parallels or is an opposite of Clarissa, I don’t know. If Septimus was a parallel of Clarissa, then his character was played well, being that he, like Clarissa, constantly thought of the past, and never the future. Making the two most similar, yet they seem different in that Clarissa recollects on happier thoughts, while Septimus dwells on depressing thoughts of the first world war.
Clarissa was obligated to the Victorian lifestyle, seen in her flashbacks to the past. At Bourton she was too set in her ways to be free spirited. Unlike Sally or Peter, Clarissa was unable to speak her mind, or do as she pleases. She appeared as the model Victorian woman, yet that held her back from following her love of Peter. The concern that her party would be inferior to other parties prevented her from enjoying herself on a day that she should be rejoicful. Clarissa also seemed to be a dreamer.
The Hours then introduces us to three women from three different decades, and their relationships with others, tied together by a common thread--Mrs. Dalloway. In Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa Dalloway undergoes an internal struggle between her love for society and life and a combined affinity for and fear of death. Her practical marriage to Richard serves its purpose of providing her with an involved social life of gatherings and parties that others may find frivolous but Clarissa sees as “an offering” to the life she loves so well. She lives her life on her own terms than that of the views of society. She is the minority in her way of thinking that is okay not to have love and life figured out by the time she is 30 years of age. All her aspirations are laughed at by her friend Lucy, whom puts her down for trying make a better life for herself instead of following with the etiquettes of society. “Forgive my plainness, Eliza. Both characters also hear the voices of their past – eventually leading to both Septimus’ and Richard’s deaths. The parallelism between the two characters is impeccable, leading me to believe that if Richard is “emptied out of the world” as McVicker states, then Septimus must be as well.

Virginia wolf was a feminist, she wrote the book “Mrs.Dalloway” in her own perspective based on experiences and emotions of everyday life. It was time for these three women to venture away from societies norms and strive for what is best… for them. Director Stephen Daldry effectively implements the same techniques of the original novel written by Michael Cunningham to portray themes of constraint from society, mortality, and what it truly means to live happily. From symbolism to the motifs, the movie is not merely a visual representation of the novel but it adds to a whole new level of emotion and experience for both the characters and the viewers alike. “To look life in the face, to know it for what it is, to love it for what it is, tis’ the light for every human being”, Virginia sincerely states. To begin, the first symbolic meaning one can interpret from the window is when Mrs. Mallard gazes out over the trees and gets lost in the little specks of sunshine peering through the cloud-covered sky. When Mrs. Dalloway finds out that Septimus, her foil in the book, committed suicide, she came to the realization that “She felt somehow very like him—the young man who had killed himself. She felt glad that he had done it; thrown it away. The clock was striking. The leaden circles dissolved in the air. He made her feel the beauty; made her feel the fun” (186). Because Mrs. Dalloway is not separated into chapters or sections, the book is mainly divided by the striking of the clock. Every time the clock strikes, it interrupts the thoughts of the characters and lends to a moment of epiphany or a shift in the book. Because the clock is a symbol for the everlasting progression of time, it waits for nobody. The clock continuously ticks, which Mrs. Dalloway was originally concerned about as the inevitable marching of time would eventually lead to her death. However, after learning about Septimus’s death, she realizes how beautiful life is. Although she has never met him, Mrs. Dalloway identifies with Septimus, and through his death, she learns to appreciate life and to accept death. The clock strikes to signify not only the progression of time, but also Mrs. Dalloway’s revelation. Class is something that is stressed in the twentieth century. Class is what identified someone to something. These classes could have been money, love, having a disability and many others. In Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway there are many different types of relationships. In the novel, the reader learns that Clarissa’s husband Richard and her party planning is dominating her, as where Lucrezia’s husband, Septimus, is dominating her. The domination seen in these two ladies is love. Love is an overwhelming power that can influence someone to do something they might have not thought about all the way through, which can ultimately affect their life in the future.
Virginia Woolf’s novel, Mrs. Dalloway, features a severely mentally ill man named Septimus Smith. Throughout the novel the reader glimpses moments of Septimus’s dementia and how his poor frazzled wife, Rezia, deals with him. Septimus, who has returned from the war and met Rezia in Italy on his discharge, has a seriously skewed version of reality. He has been through traumatic events during the war, including the death of his commanding officer and friend, Evans. Upon his return to England he suffers from hallucinations, he hears voices (especially Evans’), and he believes that the trees have a special message to convey to him. Rezia attempts to get Septimus help by taking him to several doctors. Ultimately Septimus commits suicide rather than let the doctors get to him.

Virginia Woolf creates their characters through the memories they share, and indeed fabricates their very identities from these mutual experiences. Mrs. Dalloway creates a unique tapestry of time and memory, interweaving past and present, memory and dreams. Clarissa Dalloway, the central character in Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, is a complex figure whose relations with other women reveal as much about her personality as do her own musings. By focusing at length on several characters, all of whom are in some way connected to Clarissa, Woolf expertly portrays the ways females interact: sometimes drawing upon one another for things which they cannot get from men; other times, turning on each other out of jealousy and insecurity.
