Walter Dean Myers was born in Harlem, New York on August 12, 1937. In high school he played basketball. Mr. Myers lived in West Virginia, New York, and also New Jersey. Some books Mr. Myers wrote were Monster, Fallen Angels, and Bad Boy. Books that Mr. Myers wrote weren’t all fiction he also wrote non-fiction books to. And one of Mr. Myers most treasured places to go was the library. In high school Myers was very smart although his grades weren’t very good. He had a speech pediment that slowed him down in school which’d caused kids to pick on him and called him names. Although he had a speech pediment his writing was tremendous. The only person who realized and encouraged him to keep writing was his English teacher, she told him to keep writing
Monster is an example of what Patty Campbell would call a “landmark book.” Texts such as these “encourage readers to interact with the text and with one another by employing a variety of devices, among them ambiguity” (Campbell 1) Because it is told through the eyes of Steve himself, the plot can be difficult to decipher. It is ambiguous whether he is innocent or guilty of being involved with the crime. Steve learned to make things unpredictable from his film teacher Mr. Sawicki who teaches him, “If you make your film predictable, they’ll make up their minds about it long before it’s over” (19). Steve took his teacher’s advice and made this film script entirely unpredictable, even after it is over. His lawyer, O’Brien, says in her closing statement, “What can we trace as to the guilt or innocence of my client, Steve Harmon?” (245) This leaves the jury with an undoubtedly difficult decision, as well as the reader, because there are clues to both guilt and innocence in Steve’s case.

Writing and reading can inspire people to be the influential people that they are. Literary arts can turn people’s lives around in ways they once found unimaginable. For me, Mrs. Williamson did both. Not only did she help me express myself through writing, which I now use for daily life, but she also helped me to inspire my younger siblings to write. Just as I found a way to express myself through writing, I feel my siblings can find that same passion. If my siblings can inspire others they in return can inspire more and then a chain reaction has begun. Writing provides an avenue for individuality and expression. Just based off of personal experience I understand that writing can help anyone cope with their emotions and channel them into a positive platform. Mrs. Williamson took a little boy who was acting out from frustration to a college student writing a self-expressive English paper. Anyone who desires to express themselves but can’t find the appropriate avenue should try writing because it has definitely worked for me. Writing provides a way for us to understand our dreams and desires because our emotions are displayed in our ability to express our own thoughts, use our imaginations, and expand our minds to ideas other than our own. Many English teachers have attempted to improve my writing, but at the end of the day my writing was always just mediocre. I had absolutely no motivation to give more effort than I needed to. Moreover, I viewed writing as a waste of time and wanted to finish as fast as possible so that I could destroy my neighbors in video games or practice my jump shot. My negative attitude associated with writing halted any possibility of development. Furthermore, teachers and the education system made me cringe whenever a writing assignment was introduced to the class. The first teacher that successfully created any personal interest for me to develop my writing was my high school English teacher Ryan Miller. I would have never guessed that a difficult seven in the morning English class could affect me so drastically. Not only did I finish the class with an obvious improvement in my writing, but I also formed a whole new perspective of the world around me.
