Film Noir is a genre of distinct and unique characteristics. Mostly prominent in the 40s and 50s, the genre rarely skewed from the skeletal plot to which all Film Noir pictures follow. The most famous of these films is The Big Sleep (1946) directed by Howard Hawks. This film is the go to when it comes to all the genre’s clichés. This formula for film is so well known and deeply understood that it is often a target for satire. This is what the Coen brothers did with 1998’s The Big Lebowski. This film follows to the T what Film Noir stands for.
I know you've thought about killing someone, but you're too worried about the consequences. In the short story "Cask of Amontillado" The protagonist, Montresor feels hatred toward this man Fortunato and is determined to get revenge with impunity. In "Lamb to the slaughter" a wife unsure of her feelings murders her husband. The stories are similar because the authors both create a effect of suspense while they use different types of irony and conflicts.
The Grim Sleeper explores a lot of sociology topics. It’s honestly a wild story in its entirety. Lonnie Franklin, the biggest suspect in being the Grim Sleeper. I say suspect because even though he was arrested and sentenced to death for the murders he’s committed, there's still people that believe it wasn’t him. His murders took place in the time range from 1985-2007. It’s said he had roughly 10-25+ victims.
Revenge is defined as harming someone for the wrong doings that they commit. Revenge is the key ingredient to hundreds of the most loved and action packed movies, books, and shows of today. Because of the fact that there is so much vengeance played out in entertainment media, society encourages revenge as necessary to those seeking retribution. Works of art such as Kill Bill and “Killings” are prime examples of stories that are about revenge.
In response to “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, revenge can get the best of everyone. Like most individuals, I too have found myself once glaring from the sidelines annoyed. It takes a lot to make a calm person like myself resentful, but similar to Montresor, it is possible to become so aggravated that a revengeful plot begins to form.
Plot: The kids are getting on the bus to go home after another ordinary day at high school. They noticed they had a substitute bus driver. He missed a couple of stops so Bruce volunteered to show him the way. When only the five kids who live on Valley Gardens are left, the bus driver drives past their subdivision without stopping. The kids complain and he tells them to shut up. The bus pulls off to the side of the road next to a waiting car. He orders them to get off the bus and into the car. By this time the kids realized they were being kidnapped. A woman is in the car, whose name is Rita. She drives them to a cabin about two hours away. When they arrive, the kids are fed stew. The boys were sent...
Justice is part of revenge; as also for revenge is part of justice. “Justice” comes from a Latin word that means “straight, fair, equal”, it’s the quality of being righteous and loyal towards one’s state, although serves the interests of the stronger (Hourani, 1962), while revenge is the act of taking retaliation for injuries or wrongs. What ever the circumstances are being the individual who experiences a unjust act, results in the hunt for one of these two things: Justice or revenge. What are the key differences between the two? Justice can be defined as the concept of moral rightness, which is based on the rules of law, fairness, ethics, and equality among the governed citizens. Revenge, on the other hand, refers to an action taken by an individual as a response to an act of injustice. The principle of revenge is “an eye for an eye”…. Can revenge be justified and be as equally part of justice if they both seek retribution for a wrongdoing?
V for Vendetta is a graphic novel written by Allan Moore. It is a story full of comedy with V as the protagonist who is out to fight and destroy the government and affects innocent people. The novel was later adapted into a film and directed by James McTeigue and written by Wachowski Brothers.
In “Of Revenge” by Sir Francis Bacon, he expresses his thoughts on revenge and claims that those who seek revenge only hurt themselves and referred to revenge as a “wild justice”. Additionally, Bacon claims, “…vindictive persons live the life of witches: they are mischievous and come to a bad end” which explains that private revenge ends with negativity. He believes public revenge can mostly be good. Even though revenge can be good, “…a man consumed with a desire for revenge keeps his own wounds open which otherwise would heal” (Bacon). Bacon’s idea of private revenge is present in other literature such as “The Interlopers” by Saki, “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, and in the “Autobiography of Takashi Tanemori”.
V is trying to make his world a better place by freeing dystopian Britain from the rule of the fascist Norsefire party, who have ruined his life. However his methods for doing this include torturing Evey, the young woman who trusted him, and killing anyone who was involved with Larkhill, even if they have changed their ways. McTeigue shows the audience that V is doing this because his mind is set on the goal of destroying anyone who was responsible for his past when he kills the workers at the BTN building just to send a message to Chancellor Sutler. At this point, V has gone beyond seeing the workers at BTN as humans, and has started seeing them as pawns in his game of revenge. This shows that when people are desperate to achieve something, they will stop thinking of the consequences of their
Revenge almost always has the makings of an intriguing and tragic story. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a perfect example of how revenge unfolds and what it unveils. The play tells the story of Hamlet, the prince of Denmark. Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, marries his mother soon after his father’s death. Hamlet greatly disapproves of the hasty marriage and suspects foul play. His suspicions are confirmed when the ghost of his father appears and tells him that Claudius murdered him. Hamlet’s father asks him to take revenge upon Claudius, and soon everything takes a drastic change. The courses of revenge throughout Hamlet surround each character with corruption, obsession, and fatality.
The Shakespearean playwrights Macbeth and Hamlet are both very well-known tragedies. They have many things in common but are different in some ways. Both plays involve greed but the characters are different. There are some characters that have the same qualities such as Hamlet and Malcolm who both killed for revenge. Macbeth and Hamlet are different in character even though they both killed. The tragedies are the same in that many people are killed but the reasons are very different. Macbeths need for power has caused him to lose control while Hamlets need for revenge causes him to lose his own life.
In both Wuthering Heights and Hamlet characters deal with the theme of revenge, however, both characters face revenge with a different perspective. Heathcliff is isolated, pro active and rash, while Hamlet is very public which doesn't allow him to act rashly and he spends a lot of time procratinating. The motifs and methods of both characters also adds to the difference.
Chancellor Sutler is the leader of the London government and the setting of London helps us get a better understanding of how Sutler is leading a dystopian society. This dystopian society is a very big impact on why V is wanting revenge on the government. In this society, there are many banned items, for example, certain pieces or art, butter, and god save the queen. 7 pm is the curfew for the citizens which takes away a lot of the freedom from the citizens. All of these bannings and curfews supported V wanting to have revenge on the government as he felt as if this was totally unfair. When Chancellor Sutler is talking on the BTN a panorama is used. As the panorama is panning across all the people watching Sutler we see the facial expression of the people which shows fear, sadness, and discomfort. This shot helps to support the action of why V would want revenge, if the people are unhappy with what the government is doing then something will need to be done about it. At the end of the film when V was blowing up parliament, all the people of London were dressed up with the Guy Fawkes mask on. When the masks were lifted off we saw the faces of people who had been killed by the government. The support that was shown to V while he was blowing up parliament shows us that V’s revenge was for the good of all people and it was needed to be done. During the film, Butter said, “when we catch this terrorist we will show him what terror really means”. This quote shows how culture has no respect for his people and he won't listen to what the citizens have to say. Sutler gives no right for the free trail so to get around this V had to do evil to do good. McTigues purpose of this part of the film was to focus on current events that are happening in our world today. Islamophobia in America is a big problem people are having to face, people have been discriminated because of their religion. According to
