Character Analysis In the 2004 film Crash, by director Paul Haggis, shows how society is still going through racism. Today, people are just being raised to be racist because that is what the people around them show them. Officer John Ryan, played by Matt Dillon is a very dynamic character who improves on his emotions and reactions to things. However, Officer John background and history, behavior and actions, and relationships affect him drastically as an adult. In this film Officer John Ryan is shown as a very racial man who discriminates against those who refuse to help or refuse to listen to him. Mr. Ryan is very consistent with the way he treats those around him. When something goes wrong he starts to question himself about he had done and what part he has just taken on. Such as when he called the doctor 's office he did not get what he wanted was very rude to the person but later he realizes that he should not have done that because that was the only person that could have truly helped his father and he learns that mistake when he sees his own father in pain at his own house at night. “Call any big company with a problem; why is the person you have to deal with guaranteed to be black and stupid? Why? Because corporations are smart. They actually seek out the stupidest fucking black people they can find.”(Crash). John takes his own anger out on those around him because he feels useless that he can not do anything right in the world. When takes advantage of Christine Thayer played by Thandie Newton when he pulls over her and her husband for being dark colored, he is also distracted with the anger about the doctors who can not do anything. Once that was over he took his anger out on his partner Officer Hanson played by Ryan Phillippe. What he did he knows was wrong and he would not be able to take back and her reaction to him when he touches her will stay with him forever. Towards the end when he has a new partner they are passing the highway when they see that an accident occurs. John Ryan responds quickly to what has just happened he realizes that the woman in the car is Christine. Everyone has their own way of treating those around them. One of the main topics of both stories involves racial tension within a community, focusing specifically on the tension between white and black Americans. Many of the people that Anna Smith interviewed had something to say about the race of Rodney King or how the white cops controlled the power of the city. With racial tensions boiling in the ghettos of Los Angeles between the white policemen and the black communities, violence became all too common in the community. By the 2000’s, the time setting for Crash, violence from the police became less prominent, but still evident.
Officer Ryan is a white bigoted police officer who has a clear hatred of African Americans. The scene depicts Office Ryan pulling over a vehicle, because it looks like one that was reported stolen. However, after running the plates, he knows the vehicle is not stolen, but using his Legitimate Power, he pulls the vehicle over anyway. Like most power, legitimate power is based upon perception and reality, and the ability to influence others based on their status, and the right to comply. However, once the stop is initiated, he then engages in Coercive Power, and sexually assaults the female passenger, Christine Thayer, as her husband, Cameron Thayer, watches helplessly. Ryan hatred of blacks is so intense that he does even care that he has just committed a crime in front of his partner, a partner who knows that he has just crossed the line. Officer Ryan has no respect for blacks, and used racial profiling as a means of pulling over and harassing the couple. When a person with authority uses their position to force someone to comply with what they want, by using acts of threats and intimation is coercive power.

The essence in focus centres around John Wilson, sometimes referred to as Jack, and the double life which he opts to play. Throughout the plot of the novel, personalities clash and emotions formerly unseen rise to the surface. One action is used as a recurring theme anchoring all of the chapters and events together, that being deception. Betrayal and deception by the hands of John Wilson were shown towards the main individuals of the novel, namely Polly, Elizabeth, and Jessie.

Her purpose is clear, to intrigue the audience with a true story of the murder of Polly Wilson, which had not yet been heard. Though not a lot of people had ever heard of John Wilson, the first ever Saskatchewan RNWMP officer who was found guilty of a crime, being that he killed his wife, and hung to his death. She writes her novel that is not only entertaining to her audience but also serves the purpose of educating fellow Canadians about the true life events that followed John Wilson and his fellow RNWMP officers.
One of the biggest issues depicted in the film is the struggle of minority groups and their experience concerning racial prejudice and stereotyping in America. Examples of racism and prejudice are present from the very beginning of the movie when Officer Ryan pulls over black couple, Cameron and Christine for no apparent reason other than the color of their skin. The movie Crash was directed by Paul Haggis is a powerful film that displays how race is still a sociological problem that affects one 's life. It also focuses on how we should not stereotype people based on their color because one may come out wrong in the end. Stereotyping is a major issue that is still happening in today 's society and seems to only be getting worse. This movie is a great way to see the daily life and struggle of other races and see how racism can happen to anyone, not just African Americans which seems to only be seen in the news and such.
Crash is a good movie that portrays all the racism and stereotyping that people and communities are facing. There are more issues than what I found during the movie but I will talk about the ones that stood out to me. One thing amazing about the movie is how the story develops and how all the stories tie into one another. Crash evokes the "racial" problem that faces the United States because of its diversity that should be an advantage but in general, it is not often the case. It often does not work as expected because of stereotype, discrimination and racism that face different minority communities. Whether emotion, terror and rage, Crash depicts the brutal realism of cynicism, or the American collective fantasy into force of a dominant race.
Tension between the African Americans and Caucasians have been present in America since slavery. In the movie Crash (2004), race and culture are major themes that can be seen in the lives of the characters in the film. One character in particular, Cameron, a prestigious color vision director, displays the friction between two cultures. He belongs to the educated, upper class of the Los Angeles area. He is also an African American, yet he seems to have no ties with that class. He has a light-skinned wife, attends award shows, and it appears that his acquaintances are predominately white. When he and his wife, Christine, get pulled over by a racist cop, he experiences emotions of powerlessness and helplessness that he never knew he would experience due to his upbringing and place in society. Cameron goes through a radical transformation where he comes to grips with his background and how he fits into these two clashing cultures.

We crash constantly. We crash into the cultures and lives of those that surround us in our society. We judge because we do not know or unwilling to understand the differences that surround us. The director wants the audience to make an unfair judgment on Officer Ryan because of he inappropriately searches Christine, however, as the movie progresses our judgments crashes as we begin to identify with Officer Ryan. When Graham states ?We are always behind metal and glass,? it is not the metal and glass we are behind, but the fear of understanding and trusting someone that is different from us. This fear is where our preconceived notions and racist habits come from. It is the fear of trusting that in which can cause us to crash.
