Apollo 13
The purpose of writing this paper is to identify and evaluate the developmental themes which are shown in the Apollo 13 movie. It will reflect on how the themes is related to Developmental Theories and its implications for Counselors for setting counseling goals and intervention. In addition, the reflection of developmental themes and theories and its implications for counselors has also been covered. This paper has been divided into five major parts;

Jim Lovell, Ken Mattingly, and Fred Haise train for their new mission. Days before the launch, Mattingly is discovered to have been exposed to rubella, and the flight surgeon demands his replacement with Mattingly 's backup, Jack Swigert, as a safety precaution. After a few days in space Swigert performs a standard housekeeping procedure, one of two liquid oxygen tanks explodes, emptying its contents into space and sending the craft tumbling. The other tank is soon found to be leaking. Mission Control aborts the Moon landing, Lovell and Haise hurriedly power up Aquarius as a "lifeboat" for the return home, and Swigert shuts down Odyssey before its battery power runs out. In Houston, Kranz rallies his team to come up with a plan to bring the astronauts home safely, declaring "failure is not an option". Firstly, emotional attachment along with the feeling of anxiety and worry, of astronaut’s family including their children, relatives and friends can be observed towards astronauts as they were in the space and were struggling for their return journey and life. Secondly, the love of astronaut’s family and friends towards them can be inferred towards Erikson’s sixth stage of psychosocial crisis, Intimacy vs.

People change over time, and no past history sets the future in stone. Developmentalists divide life into different segments based on age known as growth stages (Berger, 2009). Each stage affects the others causing development at every stage to build upon the other (Berger, 2009). Development does not follow a straight line, it instead moves up and down, back and forth, and it moves at different speeds (Berger, 2009). Although there are several theories of development, and it would be remiss to subscribe to only one; however for the purpose of this paper, I will focus on Erik Erikson’s Theory of Initiative versus Guilt; Industry versus Inferiority; and Identity versus Role Confusion. I also prefer to take an eclectic approach in the application of counseling theories and techniques; however for the purpose of this paper I will utilize three different therapies for each stage of development.

The Apollo 13 Mission had a huge impact on space exploration. The Determination of the crew helped them return back to earth. People may think that Apollo 13 would have been a better success if they changed the launch date. Even though they failed at their goals the overall result was success. If they had changed the launch date NASA would have had more time to check the spacecraft and make sure that it was safe. If this event had not happened NASA wouldn't have learned how to make spaceships safer as well as space exploration and learn what to do in this type of emergency.

July 21, 1969. American astronaut Neil Armstrong, radios to earth: “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” The control room in Houston, Texas bursts with cheering and applause. Kennedy’s Project Apollo put America in the lead in the Space Race. The Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States was a very big deal. The Apollo Program worked towards establishing the technology to meet other national interests in space, develop man’s capability to work in the lunar environment, and to promote nationalism and achieve preeminence in space for the United States.
One of the backup astronauts had gotten a case of measles two days before launch, exposing the rest of the crew to the disease (Anastasio). Ken Mattingly will be replaced with Jack Swigert concerning the fact that he may develop measles on the mission (Anastasio). “Ken did get another chance to fly to the moon, as the command module pilot for Apollo 16. He later became a member of the space shuttle team” (Anastasio 90). Being this was Jack Swigert’s first mission, he had trained for space entry in an extreme case he would have to replace Ken. Five words spoken by Tom Hanks’ character, Commander Jim Lovell, in the 1995 film Apollo 13, decidedly begun the change in objective for the Apollo 13 lunar mission. This line would soon become known as one of Tom Hanks’ most famous spoken lines in his acting career, but for his character and the others in the film, it would make the lunar mission a matter of life and death. The story of Apollo 13 took place in 1970, revolving around the third lunar landing mission in the Apollo space program which infamously went awry. After an oxygen tank in the astronauts’ spacecraft exploded and damaged the lunar module, the astronauts were forced to abort the mission and find a way to get back home. Although the astronauts did return home safely, the following investigation into the mission revealed a series of “fateful encounters” that could have played a role into the failure of Apollo 13. However, this procedure would require three days, and this demanded more oxygen and electricity than the crew had available to them. Eugene "Gene" Kranz, head of this flight mission, although looking on in horror, began thinking of solutions to the problem immediately after the Controls were aware of the problem on board. Knowing the options of refueling the spacecraft with oxygen or retrieving the astronauts himself, he needed to think of a strategy for a safe return. In this sense, if his solution fails, it could result in the biggest catastrophe in NASA history. There were dozens of people ready on the ground to assist this cause in whatever way possible, but no one helped this mission survive like Eugene "Gene" Kranz, especially as all final call decisions were in his hands.
Psychosocial development is development on a social realm. Psychosocial development is how one develops their mind, maturity level, and emotions over the course of one’s life. The rate of development depends on different factors such as biological processes as well as environmental factors. A man named Erik Erikson who was a psychoanalyst who believed that early childhood successes and failures were responsible for influencing later developmental stages developed this theory. Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development is based around the theory that social experience has an impact over an entire lifespan. When comparing the work of Sigmund Freud and Jean Piaget two things come to mind, they both had a lasting and profound impact on the field of psychology and both received a great amount of criticism regarding their theories. Freud is considered the founder of psychoanalysis, which is based on childhood development and psychosexual stages. Piaget was the top developmentalist of the 1960s and 1970s. His theory of cognitive development was as well studied as Freud's theory of psychosexual development was a generation before. While they both had many criticisms of their work, both Freud and Piaget influenced their respective fields of psychology so much that today their thoughts and concepts are still studied and referenced everyday. Freud’s theories have revolutionized how we think. The impact Piaget has had on developmental psychology has guided social norms of human development and education. This essay will compare and contrast the theories of Freud and Piaget.
