Our organization understands the importance of efficiency and teamwork. We recently hired a corporate psychologist that has infiltrated our departments one by one and returned with suggestions. Each group of employees was examined for ways that the company could motivate them to be more efficient and productive. We will discuss the theories that we feel apply to each department and explain why we think we have a plan for success.
We have formulated our plan for the sales team based upon Victor Vroom’s expectancy theory. In his theory, there are a few key factors to achieve our desirable out come. He believes a person is motivated to a degree in which he or she believes with effort they can achieve their performance. This is known as the expectancy factor of the theory. Instrumentality. Finally, in the theory the value of the reward must meet the needs and expectation of the individual. Valence is the value attached to this reward.
The task that we have assigned to our trained, talented sales team is to promote the designer diaper not just to the local grocery stores but to department stores such as baby gap. They will call and find locations where they can promote our designer diaper. Our sales team will constantly find new vendors to sell our product. They will also establish and maintain relationships with the vendors to ensure quality customer service is given. They will handle all complaints and give quick and easy solutions to these issues. They will visit various store to enhance our display of the designer diapers.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a muscular dystrophy that only occurs in boys. It is caused by the mutation of the DMD gene which is inheritable between families in an X-linked recessive, but it rarely occurs in people from families without a known family history of the condition. Starting from the lower limbs, people with DMD have progressive loss of muscle function and weakness. The DMD gene, which encodes the muscle protein, dystrophin, is the second largest gene. Boy’s muscle with Duchenne muscular dystrophy does not create the dystrophin. 1 in 3500 of the male births are approximately affected by the Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Physiological Basis of disease: DMD is the commonest and most serious form of the dystrophies. The gene responsible for dystrophin which, when absent, causes DMD. Amount of dystrophin correlates with the severity of the disease (i.e., the less dystrophin present, the more severe the phenotype). Since the gene is on the X chromosome, it primarily affects males, and females who are carriers have milder symptoms ( www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000705.htm).
DMD also known as muscular dystrophy is muscular disease that occurs on young boys around age four to six. Muscular dystrophy is genetically transmitted disease carried from parent to offspring. This disease progressively damages or disturbs skeletal and cardiac muscle functions starting on the lower limbs. Obviously by damaging the muscle, the lower limbs and other muscles affected become very weak. This is ultimately caused by the lack dystrophin, a protein the body produces.

Imagine waking up every morning stiff, all your muscles in your body soar, extremely tired and on the verge of exhaustion. The simple task of taking a shower and getting dressed makes you need to lay down for just a few minutes and rest. Your legs ache from a short walk up the stairs last night on your way to bed, as if you ran a marathon in your sleep, and your skin literally hurts to the touch of your clothes as they rub against you. Your blood pressure is up and you can feel the pain emanating from every part of your body. You can’t, for the life of you, find your keys as they hang from the keychain in your hand, because the pain and agitation you are feeling all over has clouded your mind. Fibromyalgia is real, it is pain, and it does exist. Although fibromyalgia awareness has progressed thru advertising there is much more that can, and needs to be done to bring this to the forefront of the medical field and other organizations as a real diagnosis. More research and Government funding is direly needed and demands significant action from our National health agencies and United States Government in the form of grants, research, trials and various drug interaction and testing.

Fibromyalgia is an extremely disabling condition associated with chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and reduced pain thresholds (Wolfe et al., 2010)(Kelley et al., 2011). Observational studies have shown that over a 12 month period 25% of men and women surveyed over the age of 65 will consult a primary care physician for musculoskeletal pain (Jordan et al., 2010). Overall, between 46% and 80% of people over the age of 65 report experiencing pain on a daily basis and 15% of women and 10% of men over 50 report widespread musculoskeletal pain (Soldato et al., 2007; Thomas et al., 2004). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated in xxxx that fibromyalgia patients generated $6000 per patient per year in healthcare costs where as another recent study of administrative claims found that fibromyalgia healthcare costs may exceed $18,000 per patient annually (Wolfe et al., 1997). In a population study of ten chronic diseases, fibromyalgia was highest ranked for healthcare not received in the previous year and in long-term disability, pain, and poor self-rated health by survey participants (Kasman and Badley, 2004).

Expectancy theory of motivation was thought up by Vroom in 1963 and expanded upon by Porter and Lawler in 1968 and Pinder in 1987. The theory is heavily based and influence by individuals driving force and motivation in completing the task (Vroom, 1963) and the performance behind it, these driving forces are valence, instrumental and the expectancy (Pinder, 1987). Valence is based on one’s perception of rewards for the outcome; this can be influenced by ones values, goals, needs and preference of rewards, which can be intrinsic or extrinsic satisfaction. The instrumental refers to the rewards when expectation are met, depending on the individual this can be an increase in pay, promotions or recognition, this depends on the individual’s need which may result in greater motivation (Herzberg, 1968). There are three main components to this theory, Expectancy, Instrumentality, and Valence, these components separate what exactly motivates the employee. Expectancy is the “belief that increased effort will lead to increased performance” (“Vroom expectancy motivation theory,” 2016). Every task or assignment has an expected outcome, based on the amount of effort put in. Instrumentality is related to “the person’s perception of the probability that performance will lead to a specific outcome” (Lee, 2007). The individual attaches a certain possibility with the completion of this task. Such as excelling a task in order to receive a promotion or be recognized for the amount of work put in. Vroom defined valence as ‘‘affective orientations toward particular outcomes’’ (Lee 2007). Which simply states the importance given to a specific task.
