The movie Coach Carter is a very inspirational and motivational movie. Coach Carter takes over coaching his high school basketball team. The team is a group of students who are rude, undisciplined, and out of control. Coach shows many different levels of negotiations throughout the movie. He uses many tools to accomplish his goals such as the want factor, collaboration, crafting agreements, and negotiation change.
The move consists of six main characters. Coach Carter and principle Garrison are the two guiding adults in the movie. There are four factors in creating the want factor. You need to appreciate the other person’s situation, personal feelings, ideas, and last but not least the face (Kolb & Williams, 2003,p. 202-203). Coach Carter sets asides his needs to focus on the students’ needs. He even makes his business second to the students’ needs. Coach explains the life after high school if they continue on the track they are heading down. They will be heading to two places, jail or death. The statistics show that very few students graduate and even fewer end up going to college. So coach tells the students that he will do everything he can to make sure they all graduate and go to college. He shows the students they have a choice. Cruz, on of the basketball players, shows a huge dislike to the coach’s way. He even goes as far as trying to punch Coach. After he quits the team and realizes he has made a wrong decision, he begs for his position back. So coach gives him an unachievable ultimatum of 1000 push-ups and 1000 “suicides”. One example is when Cruz went to coach’s house after his cousin was shot. Coach was there with open arms and moral support. He was able to show him there is a greater purpose. Another example is Battles struggles with outside situations and poor grades. He takes the lockout the hardest because he shines on the court. Later, when coach finds out that his brother recently passed away, he allows him to return to the team after he apologizes. At the end of the movie, it shows how the team graduated and a lot of them chose to attend college. This shows that all of Coaches efforts went to good
Students should read this book in a high school English classroom because it demonstrates how relationships can be difficult, but teamwork can help to solve many issues. Hutch realized that it would not help his team to continue fighting with Darryl and by being mad at his father. He was able to take those difficult relationships and form them into positive outcomes and achieve his goal. After winning the championship game, “Hutch made his way through his teammates, and up through the stands and did something he had not done in a very long time: Hutch hugged his father. And his father hugged him back” (Lupica 243). This proves to students that if they continue to work hard and focus on a goal, they can achieve it by being a team player on and off the field.
When Boone was appointed to the position of football coach at T.C. Williams High School, he became the visionary of success to the program. His vision for the team from the beginning was to win a state championship. As a leader one must be a visionary and have an ultimate goal that needs to be accomplished. Difficult situations continuously present themselves and need to be handled effectively in order to accomplish the leader’s vision, which often occurred during Boone’s journey with his team. The film “Hoosiers” depicts the story of Norman Dale, a former college basketball coach who has been asked to take over as coach of the Hickory High School basketball team. The team’s previous coach had recently passes away and the team was left without a coach. The small town’s allegiance towards the old coach is an obstacle the team faces. Since the old coach had passed away the team’s best player, Jimmy has decided he would not be going out for the team this season. This leaves the team with only seven players and without their star player. Norman is also warned by a fellow teacher who has been looking out for Jimmy since his mother got sick, that he should pressure Jimmy into playing. Instead of pressuring Jimmy to play, Norman leaves him alone until Jimmy decides it is time to play for the team again.
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. In the book, "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, he talks about the importance of a teacher and coach as a role model for kids. He talks about his successes he had in coaching, the lessons he has learned, and the ones he has taught. In the book, you will get to walk through his life from when he was a little kid and first fell in love with basketball to when he retired from active coaching at UCLA in 1975. He also talks about his "Pyramid of Success" and the traits that every player should have.
The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. To allot it something they just can't live without and others just choose to not even bother with it. I think that it is worth the time to look more into basketball. Coach Herman Boone is the main African-American character in this film. He is a football coach who is brought in by the newly diversified T.C. Williams High School as a form of affirmative action. This character struggles throughout the movie with dealing with the prejudices of his players, of other football coaches, of parents, and even of the school board who hired him in order to try to create a winning football team. The movie I decided to analyze was Remember the Titans. I examined the dilemmas and ethical choices that were displayed throughout the story. In the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria Virginia integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The Caucasian head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach (Denzel Washington) from North Carolina, which causes a fury among white parents and students. Tensions arise quickly among the players and throughout the community when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Coach Boone is a great example of a leader. He knows he faces a tough year of teaching his hated team. But, instead of listening to the hating town or administrators, Boone pushes his team to their limits and forces good relationships between players, regardless of race. His vision for the team involves getting the players concerned in what the team needs to become, and not what it is supposed to be; a waste. Boone is a convincing leader with a brutal, boot camp approach to coaching. He believes in making the players re-build themselves as a team. When Boone says, You will wear a jacket, shirt, and tie. I have loved this sport since I was four years old and ever since then I have always pictured myself being a part of this sport when the moments are at it’s brightest when the NCAA tournament kicks off. Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. Motivation needs motivators to help athletes when they seem to have nothing left. Although in sports we want to see consistent plays, performance, and skills, motivation is something that is not consistent. “Athlete’s motivation is being permanently upgraded, developed and changed under the different environmental influences present during sports participation” (Baric, 2007). “Situational factors act interactively on athletes’ dispositions; the variations in sports behavior are the functions of personal characteristics (goals, skills, knowledge, personality traits, etc.) and the environmental influences (physical and social alike)” (Baric, 2007). Personal and environmental influence can make a difference in how an athlete gains motivation. Motivation from a coach or a parent can lead an athlete to either see the support in a negative or positive view. Screaming, yelling, body language, and tone of voice can really present what someone is saying to be considered either in a positive or negative light. As a coach, you have to understand how you are presenting yourself towards your team or athlete. Parents, teammates, and supporters have to analyze how they are coming off within a situation especially when you are trying to motivate someone. When you have a disconnection between your verbal and non-verbal communication, an athlete can take the information and motivation as a negative and not positively. Coaches as everyone else need to learn how to communicate with their athletes and team. Motivation is something all athlete should posse on their own, but sometimes athlete needs support. No championship or a game was won, because of one person it takes coaches, parents, supporters, trainers, and so much more to make an athlete want to win even if it is a backyard game.
