The disheartening yet empowering memoir of Melba Pattillo Beals evokes not only emotion from a reader, but encourages one to fight for their beliefs regardless of the negative impact it may have on the individual. Warriors Don’t Cry is the story of perseverance, adversity, and the crucial concept that causing social change creates internal isolation. The daily struggles of Melba clearly depict the unending torment and isolation shown to her by not only the southern whites of Arkansas, but also black individuals out of the fear of association. Adversity for the Little Rock Nine stemmed from both white and black citizens of the city, each for different reasons. In terms of the white citizens in Little Rock, they were afraid that they would become equal to the other black school children. “We’re scared to death five hundred of you’all are gonna be coming to school,(p.126)” this depicts the fact that white teenagers in Arkansas were fearful of the unknown just as Melba was fearful of her unknown torment every day. The integration of two groups into one school was challenging to say the least, however, it is understandable that both parties would struggle with accepting an unknown presence in their previously divided world. Secondary to not being accepted by the white individuals of Little Rock, Melba faces adversity and a lack of acceptance from her own friends and community. “You gotta get used to the fact that you’all are just not one of us anymore. You stuck your necks out, but we’re not willing to die with you.(p.145)” This was told to Melba the night of her sweet sixteen by her friend who not only did not attend but went to another party instead.
