Motivation and work design is a major goal to many organizations and their employees. Motivation at a work place means helping employees enhance their job performance. When discussing about motivation, it is something an employer can show to their employees so they can do better at work as well to feeling some type of appreciation. For example, a company who has goals at a work place tends to help employees perform better because they know that they will receive some type of reward for doing so. If an employee is asked to finish a project by 12pm and as a reward they will be able to leave early, it is a higher chance that this employee will complete the task as quick as possible. As defined by Parker and Ohly (2008), work design is a structure, content, and configuration of people’s work tasks and roles which continues to be important within the contemporary workplaces. In this article, they also mentioned how feedback can be relevant to work design and how it can help the company reach its ultimate goals. Getting feedback helps enhance performance and quality of ones work force as mentioned earlier in this paper. Another work design that is used as job characteristic is known as autonomy. Autonomy is when a person has the freedom to make their own decision for specific tasks. As mentioned in this article of Parker and Ohly (2008), they state that when people have autonomy then that means that the results of a task would depend on their own efforts and performance, which will then motivate them to doing a better job at it. In an article by Pinder (2008), he also mentions that valence is the value a person expects to achieve from an outcome; it is what contributes to the motivation to act. When comparing autonomy and valence as these articles mention, it means that a person would feel motivated to work and are expected to show their best performance in which the organization believe they can achieve.
