In life, having someone to care and look after you is necessary. In many ways, a mother gives the love and care needed to help a child grow. In Sue Monk Kidd's, The Secret Life of Bees, Lily Owens, the main character, does not have a mother to look after her. However, it is the minor characters that play the mother figures in her life due to her mother's passing. May and Rosaleen are mother figures towards Lily. Throughout the story, Lily realizes that although she may not have her mom with her, there are many other women who she views as mother figures because of how they help her grow. All children need love to help them grow and flourish. If a child lacks the sense of a loving parent to child bond, it can result in them feeling unloved. Lily often times feels unloved as a result of her father's abusive and neglectful behavior towards her. Lily decides to run away with Rosaleen, who for much of Lily’s life, has been the one to care for her. Lily and Rosaleen find themselves at the home of the Boatwright sisters. Throughout her time staying with the Boatwrights, Lily is being greatly cared for by the sisters including May Boatwright, the youngest sister. Through May and Rosaleen’s actions, Lily comes to realize that there is love all around her. “And there they were. All these mothers.I have more mothers than any eight girls off the street. They are the moons shining over me,” (Kidd 302). Lily views these women as her mother figures because they show her that they love her. Having insight on how Lily perceives these women, it is clear that she is very grateful for how much love they provide her. Lily is appreciative towards May and Rosaleen, through their major and minor acts as Lily’s mother. They help to fill the place of a loving parent that she needs since her mother is not able to do so. May and Rosaleen give Lily the love she needs much like how Mother Teresa loves and cares for the poor children in developing nations who many times do not have a stable family life. “Mother Teresa’s ministry was centered on love. She cared for the poor’s physical needs, but her main focus was on loving them. Mother Teresa’s life exemplified the meaning of love and of giving. In Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild, Chris was a twenty-four-year-old man that decided to escape the materialistic world of his time for a life based on the simplistic beauty of nature. He graduated at the top of his class at Emory University and grew up in affluent Annandale, Virginia, during the early 1980’s. In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Lily was a fourteen-year-old girl who grew up in the 1960’s, a time when racial equality was a struggle. She had an intense desire to learn about her deceased mother. Her nanny, Rosaleen, with whom she grew very close over the years, raised Lily with little help from her abusive father. When her father failed to help Rosaleen after three white men hospitalized her, Lily was hysterical. Later, Lily decided to break Rosaleen out of the hospital and leave town for good. While there are differences between Chris McCandless and Lily Owens, they share striking similarities. Chris McCandless’ and Lily Owens’s inconsistencies of forgiveness with their parents resulted in damaged relationships and an escape into the unknown.
Lily shows forgiveness and understanding towards her mother in the quote at the top of page 277, “a queenless colony is a pitiful and melancholy community; there may be a mournful wail or lament from within. Without intervention, the colony will die. But introduce a new queen and the most extravagant change takes place” (277). At the beginning of the novel, the queen bee represents Deborah, Lily’s mother. When she passes away, Lily’s life spins out of control.
In life, actions and events that occur can sometimes have a greater meaning than originally thought. This is especially apparent in The Secret Life Of Bees, as Sue Monk Kidd symbolically uses objects like bees, hives, honey, and other beekeeping means to present new ideas about gender roles and social/community structures. This is done in Lily’s training to become a beekeeper, through August explaining how the hive operates with a queen, and through the experience Lily endures when the bees congregate around her.
This “home” that she finds brightly displays the ideas of identity and feminine society. Though Lily could not find these attributes with T. Ray at the peach house, she eventually learns the truth behind her identity at the pink house, where she discovers the locus of identity that resides within herself and among the feminine community there. Just like in any coming-of-age story, Lily uncovers the true meaning of womanhood and her true self, allowing her to blossom among the feminine influence that surrounds her at the pink house. Lily’s biases in The Secret Life Of Bees have altered greatly; she now knows that people of color have the ability to fend for themselves, and that they can be strong and influential people. So, she breaks her beloved nanny out of prison, and Lily escapes to Tiburon South Carolina, a town she links to her mother through the writing on one of her old possessions. While in Tiburon, Lily finds the calendar sisters three very different, very helpful sisters. The family agrees to take Lilly in, despite the fact that almost every white person in town frowns upon the very idea of this white girl staying in an African American household. While staying with the sisters, August, May, and June, Lily learns lots of things, ranging from bee keeping, to why and how her mother first left her. She falls in love, explores her past, and finds it within herself to forgive her mother for leaving her, and herself, for shooting her mom. This book is rich in both emotion, and culture.
Janie's Grandmother is the first bud on her tree. She raised Janie since she was a little girl. Her grandmother is in some respects a gardener pruning and shaping the future for her granddaughter. She tries to instill a strong belief in marriage. To her marriage is the only way that Janie will survive in life. What Nanny does not realize is that Janie has the potential to make her own path in the walk of life. This blinds nanny, because she is a victim of the horrible effects of slavery. She really tries to convey to Janie that she has her own voice but she forces her into a position where that voice is silenced and there for condemning all hopes of her Granddaughter become the woman that she is capable of being.
According to pages 31 and 32, Lily said, “I watched their wings shining like bits of chrome in the dark and felt longing build in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, just flying for the feel of the wind, split my heart down its seam.” She was the bee, flying to feel the wind, but full of emptiness because she couldn’t find her flower; her mother. Since the age of 4, Lily grew up without a mother. After the bees came the summer of 1964, she thought, “Looking back on it now, I wanted to say the bees were sent to me. And for that reason, when Janie was about to enter her womanhood in searching for that love, Nanny forced her to marry Mr. Logan Killicks, a much older man that can offer Janie the protection and security, plus a sixty-acre potato farm. Although Janie in her heart never approves what her Nanny forced her to do, she did it anyway. She convinced herself that by the time she became Mrs. Killick, she would get that love, which turned out to be wrong.

This can lead to the destruction of the hive and death of the bees unless a new queen is brought in to guide them. Then, the bees will cooperate and once again be a prosperous community.
