Love is based on an individual's experiences and their feelings, that make them evolve a definition of love for themselves. People explain and define love on how they and others experience it. It is quite difficult to define love because it is such an abstract concept. People's misconceptions of love is when you feel a strong romantic affection for another person. For myself, love is an indescribable feeling that happens when I have strong feelings for a person romantically, or for a family member I am close with, and very close friends I have known for a long time. Love isn't just a current feeling, it can be shown and felt in memories that were received when the person was with you. What Morrie does is he emphasizes the idea because Morrie has been derived from love in his childhood, it foreshadows that this will be a recurring theme in the book. Morrie's mother died when he was very young, his father was always working and wasn't interested in showing affection and love towards Morrie and his brother. When Eva came into their house she provided them with motherly love, that they hadn't had in awhile. Morrie had realized just how important it is to show affection towards others and he emphasized that for the rest of his life. Morrie is getting worse and “Nightline”wants to have another interview with him before he passes. Morrie thinks his death is going to be soon so he wants to get the interview over with. His aphorism is significant because when we’re in bed we’re not doing anything but laying down or sleeping. We’re not out being active we’re doing nothing like a dead person. Love to me means never giving up on someone and always being there for them. Love is a strong word because most of the people who say the word don’t mean it. Love is always being taken for granted because of how people today abuse the word. It’s important in our world because if we didn’t have love most of us wouldn’t be happy or alive. Morrie talks about how memories are what keeps a person alive. He says if we can still hear a person’s voice when they’re not around we won’t forget them.
According to kids data center, “24,444,000 kids leave with a single parent.” Morrie’s biological mother died when he was eight. Being the only english speaker, Morrie, read the telegraph first and was the one to tell his family that his mother had passed. This was a very hard time for Morrie. Morrie said on page eighteen ”Accept the past as the past, without denying it or discarding it.” Morrie had to accept at a young age that people come then go and that he couldn't change anything about it. His father wouldn't let him talk about his biological mother which is explaining the second part of the quote, he decided it was better to talk about your hardships. He decided that you shouldn't try to ignore it or act like it never happened. In the book, Morrie cries over his dead mother as an elderly man. He still allows himself to feel deeply rooted emotions even after it happened many years ago. His mother's death also made Morrie very sympathetic when hearing about other people’s pain. Morrie can relate to their pain so he understands their tremendous distress. This is one reason why Morrie is immensely caring. He knows people can have a lot of pain even if they try not to show it, so he shows everyone love. This is why he says “What’s wrong with being second?” because he believes everyone is entitled to the same love. This is shown in the book throughout Morrie’s and Mitch’s friendship as adults. In the movie, “Tuesdays With Morrie”, Mitch’s old professor, Morrie, is diagnosed with ALS. Mitch finds out that he is dying, and wants to fulfill the promise to visit him after graduation. Mitch starts visiting him. He talks to him and goes places with him, but when his condition worsens it is hard to go anywhere.
Terri, in particular, has a unique perspective on love. This is exemplified in the beginning of the story, when Terri is introduced: “Terri said the main she lived with before she lived with Mel loved her so much he tried to kill her,” (Carver 170). Love plays an important role in most physical and emotional relationships. Love is a word that can prove difficult to define or even compare to other emotions. This is due to the diversity of meaning and the complexity of the emotion itself. Everyone has been in love at least once before and has gotten a taste of all the good and bad things that come with it. Christina Rossetti’s “Song” presents some of the good parts of love while Philip Larkin’s “Talking in Bed” shows us some of the bad parts of love. Larkin’s poem presents a failing relationship where communication has failed between a couple and things are getting more and more difficult. Rossetti’s poem presents a wholly different view on love; it is told from the viewpoint of someone talking to his or her lover about what said lover should do after the speaker dies. The love between them seems better, more powerful and good. The two poems also present wholly different attitudes towards “The End,” whether that is the end of life or the end of the relationship. Larkin presents the end as something dark and sad, difficult to cope with. Rossetti, on the other hand, talks about the end as just another beginning, a chance to start over in a new world. Finally, the two poems represent remembrance in different ways. Larkin’s presents memory as something extremely important while Rossetti implies that it does not matter whether we remember or not.
After analyzing Raymond Carver’s “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” it is easy to see that there are several different ideas concerning true love that the characters in the story are in dispute over. Terri’s idea of real love is the most valid out of the group at the table. All of the members of the group are rather confused as to what real love is. Terri is included as one of the confused. However, I believe that she is the closest to understanding what love is. A key piece of evidence demonstrating her understanding of love is her remark to Laura and Nick. She scolds the couple for basing their relationship on physical aspects, rather than emotion or passion. Terri, like the rest of the party, is on her second marriage. Her first husband was an abusive man that beat her, and even dragged her by her ankles around their living room. Terri’s current husband, Mel, is a cardiologist that believes in spiritual love, and that between spouses, people are barren and hollow inside, and that he could be married to any other empty person without difference. Mel is rather shielded from emotion between spouses. His only real love lies with his children, unfortunately Mel allows his conflict with his ex wife to block him from calling his them. Terri does love Mel, but she reminisces about her time with Ed. Terri realizes that Ed was full of emotion, and that he was just befuddled and chaotic in his methods of sharing his feelings....

This goes along with what I stated before on “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love” how we don’t know everyone’s complete background to why they would think love is to them. In Arthur M. Saltzman’s reading of “What We Talk about When We Talk about Love” suggests that “The saving grace of love is its elasticity” (1571). Something I also support since Mel and Terri have both been remarried, undergone hardships like divorce and tragedy. Proving that even though love is not everlasting it is elastic in the way that it is retainable. A.O. Scott’s criticism on “Looking for Raymond Carver” states on page 1576, how the narrator of “Cathedral” has an epiphany after drawing the cathedral for the blind man. Morrie’s message was, in short, not to become preoccupied with death and dying, but to live the life that you still have left in a meaningful and rewarding way. He believed that although death would soon take him, he wanted to teach others and share his ideas so that they could be passed on to future generations.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary gives us a simple definition of love as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person (Merriam-Webster). We recognize that this could be romantic, filial (parent-child), or platonic love. Humans by nature have an almost innate desire to be loved but our ability to truly conceptualize it is based on personal life experience. Those experiences usually define or distort love in our eyes. Relationships, as most honest people would confess, are not easy. They are filled with good and bad times, periods of immense joy and of pain or testing. This is particularly found in romantic love, so much so that the theme, love, has been the driving force in countless movies, music, television, and literary works of art throughout all time periods, genres, and cultures. Love is having compassion for others, sharing feelings and your life with another person, as well as, having faith in others and forgiving those we love for the any errs that they may make. Most of all, we must be committed to those we love. Of course, this is only my opinion. No matter how long I try to explain what love is ultimately it is up to you, the reader, to define what love is to you. The word love is usually misused or misinterpreted. There are numerous meanings and definitions to this overly used word. Not many of them make much sense to me. Love is a feeling of complete bliss. Love is something that can’t be touched or bought, but is something that is much better than money and earthly objects. I can stay here and describe love all day long and still have so much more to say about this word days later. Love isn’t a word that should be used lightly, but usually is.
