Morality is the philosophical study of moral action. It looks at what is right and wrong and how people should behave. In order to decide what is right and wrong, Kant came up with the theory of deontology, which is an ethical system based on the duties and moral obligations of society. Deontology is best explained when the opposite theory of consequentialism is also understood. Consequentialism suggests that we should make moral decisions based on the consequence of the action and the consequence of the action should make the greatest number of people happy. Therefore, according to consequentialism, it really doesn’t matter what the action is, as long as the consequence is good. Consequentialism, for instance, accepts that lying to someone in order to somehow help them is perfectly ok as long as the result is good. Deontology suggests the exact opposite- lying is wrong no matter what context because it is one’s duty to be honest. Kant notices that we can only control our own motives, we cannot control the consequences of our motives, and therefore, we should make decisions based on action, not the consequences.
Kant assumes that reason is the best method of deciding what is moral. Within a free society, not dictated by a corrupt leader, or even influenced by what religion expects of one, one is capable of making a rational decision about right and wrong. Kant believes that if one is moral because the law or even if God’s law mandates it, the person is not truly making moral decisions, but is simply following rules in order to get a reward or avoid punishment. A true democratic society would, in theory, abide by Kantian ethics. All citizens would elect the government, because everyone would be able to choose based on reason and everyone would have equal rights. The government would not lie to the people by hiding information to protect the citizens. All lying would be wrong, which would leave very little room for corruption. It would not adjust the laws to benefit the wealthy, because of the universal law. In fact, the laws would be put in place by the people, for the people, and apply to everyone. The majority would not oppress minorities because everyone would be rational enough to make good decisions for everyone. The government would only ask for an amount of taxes that everyone would be able to pay.
Deontology diverges from consequentialism because deontology concentrates on the rightness or wrongness of the actions themselves instead of the consequences. There are different types of deontological theories. According to Kant, theoretical reasoning helps us discover what we should believe whereas the practical reasoning tells us what we should do. Morality falls under theoretical reasoning. In Kantian deontology, motives matter. Rather than consequences, it is the motive of an action makes that action morally right or wrong. Likewise, if an action intends to hurt someone, but eventually it benefits the other person, then it does not make that action morally right. Actions of any sort, he believed, must be undertaken from a sense of duty dictated by reason, and no action performed for expediency or solely in obedience to law or custom can be regarded as moral. A moral act is an act done for the "right" reasons. Kant would argue that to make a promise for the wrong reason is not moral - you might as well not make the promise. You must have a duty code inside of you or it will not come through in your actions otherwise. Our reasoning ability will always allow us to know what our duty is.
The position that I hold regarding the essay’s question is that I do not believe in an objective morality or in objective moral truths, I believe that all morality is entirely relative and subjective based on cultural norms because moral relativism is the philosophized meaning that right and wrong are not absolute values and that they are personalized based on the individual and the circumstances or cultural orientation. In Friedrich Nietzsche’s book, Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche discusses morality and the two categories that you will find at the very basis of all varieties of morality. One category of morality focuses on the “Higher Man” and his superiority to all those under him and his caste. According to Deontological ethics theory, an action is considered favourable sometimes because of some good aspect of action in itself without considering its good result from the action. This theory is much based upon the one’s morals and values which expresses the “sake of duty” and virtue. Deontology tells us to be fair and not to take advantage of others while teleology tells about doing whatever we want and it gives us a result that is good to us. [17]
While Kant’s theory may seem “overly optimistic” (Johnson, 2008) now, it was ruled as acceptable and rational behavior then. Kant believed that any moral or ethical decision could be achieved with consistent behavior. While judgment was based on reason, morals were based on rational choices made by human beings (Freeman, 2000). A human’s brain is the most advanced in the animal kingdom. Not only do human beings work on instinct, but they have the ability to sort out situations in order to make a decision. This includes weighing the pros and cons of decisions that could be made and how they affect others either positively or negatively. This is called rational thought. Kant believed that any human being able to rationalize a decision before it was made had the ability to be a morally just person (Freeman, 2000). There were certain things that made the decision moral, and he called it the “Categorical Imperative” (Johnson, 2008). If someone was immoral they violated this CI and were considered irrational. The CI is said to be an automatic response which was part of Kant’s argument that all people were deserving of respect. This automatic response to rational thinking is where he is considered, now, to be “overly optimistic” (Johnson, 2008).
Whether put simply or scrutinized, morality cannot be defined simply by looking at it from one or two perspectives. One must acknowledge the fact that there are several different factors that affect judgment between “right” and “wrong”. Only after taking into account everything that could possibly change the definition of righteousness can one begin to define morality. Harriet Baber, a professor at San Diego State University, defines morality as “the system through which we determine right and wrong conduct”. Baber refers to morality as a process or method when she calls it a “system”. In saying “we” she then means to say that this concept does not only apply to her but also to everyone else. Through morality, according to her, one can look at an action, idea, or situation and determine its righteousness and its consequences.

Morality has been a subject of many philosophical discussions that has prompted varied responses from different philosophers. One of the most famous approaches to morality is that of Immanuel Kant in his writing Groundwork of Metaphysics of Morals. Kant in this work argues that the reason for doing a particular action or the drive to do good things is a fundamental basis of defining moral quality in a person. To him, an action could be considered morally right only if the motivation behind doing that action was out of ‘goodwill’. When he defines these moral rules, he characterizes them in the form of imperatives – the hypothetical imperative and categorical imperative.
