Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a film making fun of multiple tales from the middle ages. The film was first aired in 1969. Monty python was originally on a television program. Many people think it is pointless and dumb. But it is a comedy and many people enjoy it. An essay from Cinema Arthuriana gives an opinion on how he believes its techniques are quite funny (Cinema Arthuriana). The series is just a joke and not meant to be taken seriously. The film was eventually put together and released as a movie.
The movie is set in 932 A.D. in England. The film was made to make fun of the typical medieval tales and noble nights. As the plot goes along, during the film a book pops up showing which tale is coming up next. Monty Python and the Holy Grail takes many different Middle Age tales and turns them into entertainment. The tales are "The Tale of Sir Robin," "The Tale of Sir Galahad," “The Life of Python,” and “Sir Lancelot.” Every story that they use is combined to make one long story. The writers took this and made it a joke. A man wanted to get rid of an old man that wasn’t dead anymore. So, he paid the man to take away the old man as he yelled “Im not dead yet”. Another example of how they turn things into jokes is the Black Night. The Black Knight is known for “none shall pass” and is huge who kills anyone who tires to pass. In the film he is big, but also stupid. King Author cuts his arm off and says “tis but a scratch” then gets the other arm cut off and says, “it’s just a flesh wound”.
