Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Alice in Wonderland is a classic novel written by Lewis Carroll. The story is about how a young girl’s curiosity leads her to discover a whole different world in which she grows and matures. In the novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, readers can see the monomyth cycle expressed through various stages including: the beginning of her journey, meeting the mentors, and meeting enemies and allies.
Alice’s journey and call to adventure begins with a talking animal that sparks her curiosity. “He (Cheshire Cat) is the one who sends Alice not only on her way to the Mad Hatter and March Hare, but also to croquet with the queen” (Mader). This can show that the Cheshire Cat is showing Alice around and is okay with helping her. Throughout the rest of the novel we can see how Cheshire Cat influenced Alice.The second article source says, “He (Cheshire Cat) is the only thing that gives truthful information to Alice, revealing that Wonderland is a mad place, and by being normal in it, Alice is also mad in its context” (“Wonderland”). This is an example that shows that the Cheshire Cat wants nothing but to provide Alice with whatever she needs to get through Wonderland. He tells the truth and tries to help as much as he can. "Imagine her surprise, when the White Rabbit read out, at the top of his shrill little voice, the name “Alice!” (Carroll 132). This shows that Alice is called up as a witness of the trial when she has no evidence and has no idea what had actually happened. This is a true test of what she will do in this situation. This is also one of the biggest problems she faces. This quote helps show how a stage of the monomyth cycle, approach, is presented in the novel.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland represents the monomyth cycle as shown through her journey of meeting mentors, meeting her allies and her enemies, and facing her biggest problem. Although not all steps of the monomyth cycle are presented in the novel, it is still a great example of a journey a protagonist must go through and learn
