Is there any way of avoiding the more serious manifestations (as with Paul Keller) of pressure on the job? Maybe if employees had to step outside to smoke instead of at their desk this might help to keep them more focused on their responsibilities at their desk. Being able to smoke at the desk seemed to be a distractor from the immediate task at hand having the employee to feel relaxed, causing them to lapse into reveries of their situations outside of the workplace. Employee should not feel pressure on a job from upper management that would make them feel as if they made a mistake that could cause them from getting their pay increase or maybe even terminated, because mistake happens and it is not as if the employee is doing it on purpose. Also if a manager knows the employee is having personal problems at home they might want to suggest they get help with their …show more content…

Should he refer Keller to a professional counselor? The proper role of the supervisor is to ensure that all procedures are followed by all subordinates so that the countdown proceeds smoothly and without mishaps, and to make sure his employees are ok and to provide reasonable assistance to help the employee carry out his or her responsibilities. To be aware of warning signals and be responsive to or in some instances initiate a discussion that leads to an EAP referral. Maintain strict confidentiality in order to respect the employee’s rights and self-worth. Communicate the philosophy, goals, and procedures of the Employee Assistance Program outlined in these guidelines. Encourage the employee to seek help through the EAP as an option for resolving problems affecting performance. Ensure that the employee’s promotional or other opportunities are not compromised by participation in the program. As a manager or supervisor, you may have at some time noticed that personal problems have interfered with an employee’s performance.
