Latin America is a region of happiness and hatred, but most of all, Latin America is a place of history and change. Like many movements in history there is a rise and fall, the meaning of modernism in the Latin Americas enhances our understanding of humanities because it gives us a better understanding of human experiences at the time and it gives the viewer a sense of connection with those who have come before them. Of those people two of them can otherwise be known as Rubén Darío and José Martí.
The Spanish language literary movement Modernismo (also known as Modernism) emerged near the late 1880’s.It was a form of language that by now has faded due to changes in society. For starters, this literary movement had a large influence on romanticism and symbolism, and found influence in European models that were greatly admired ("donquijote.org"). Modernism is a movement that fought against the middle-class, looking for an aristocratic enhancement in the content and the beauty of the form, changing the metrics of poetry in Spanish to become more like classical Latin forms ("donquijote.org"). Modernisms theme focused mainly on love, loneliness, sensuality, and eroticism. These were all idealistic for the meaning of a woman. Exoticism in modern poetry is also vital and it is shown through the language used, for example exotically named flowers like the lotus or magnolia; materials such as silk and porcelain; precious stones for example jade, emeralds and rubies; mythological and exotic place names; sayings and Gallicisms; all of which create an aristocratic atmosphere ("donquijote.org").

Johns recognizes the architectural dependence of the influential Mexicans constructing Mexico City when he states, “Mexican architecture, on the other hand, was an expression of a city run by a people who were looking to create their own culture while entirely dependent on the industry and ideas of Europe and America” (22). The same construction that the elite felt was a celebration of a newfound dignity in the Mexican people was criticized, by visitors and locals alike, as grandiose and a futile effort to shield the native roots of a circle of imposters. Johns’s argues that the “Mexicans knew little of their adopted European tradition, had acquired even less of its taste, and enjoyed none of its tranquility” (23). While the influence on the Westside led to development, the squalor and lack of authority of the peasants on the Eastside created mesones, or as Johns described them, “.a little more than ‘a bare spot to lie down in, a grass mat, company with (the) vermin that squalor breeds.’” (48).

Valle’s most significant contribution to the Spanish theatre is his invention of the literary style of esperpento, which is best represented in one of his most famous plays, Luces de Bohemia. Valle created esperpento with the aim of representing the harsh realities of Spanish twentieth century society through the concave lens of grotesque deformation, so that he could present the lives of the Spaniards in the light of mockery and absurdity. During his writing of Luces de Bohemia, the Spanish society has been brought to a halt, along with the lack of political progress and social improvement, therefore this concerning political situation has influenced and steered Valle towards his literary evolution, the exaggerated grotesque, which he though was the only suitable way to represent the shocking reality and problems of Spain. Jorge Luis Borges possesses writing styles unlike others of his time. Through his series of works, he has acquired the title of "the greatest living writer in the Spanish language." The particular example of work that I read, titled "Ficciones," was a definite portrayal of his culture. The book was not merely a list of facts from his birth country; instead the real cultural knowledge came from his writing style. The book consisted of two parts; each part was broken up into stories. Each one, despite being fiction, is a painting of his experiences, and the cultures of Buenos Aires. Among his themes are myths passed down through the families in his country. I thought that the stories that were contained in this collection were very educational. When finally taking a minute to analyze, and find deeper meaning to the tales, I discovered that they all posses what he has known in his life. He is easily distinguishable in his works. Art movement’s characteristics vary from nation to nation, but painting can be used as a critique of the socio-political reality in a given nation. It is a creative way to communicate with a population about economic, education and social issues.
