The History of Mobile Communications (Aundrea) The history of mobile communications has made a huge impact on how we live our lives on a day to day basis. Who would have thought that a small piece of equipment, had great influences in our society and the world. This all began in the 1940 's, when Bell Laboratories introduced the United States and Canada to the idea of cellular technology. One of the largest communication companies, Motorola was the first company to embark on this technology. In 1968, in order to successfully launch the cellular technology, AT&T and Bell Laboratories allocated for more frequency, that would increase the coverage to larger areas. The concepts and conventions generated from these IM systems laid the foundation for the Short Message Service (SMS) texting system which allows users to send and receive text messages with each other’s mobile devices provided that the message does not exceed 160 characters in length. SMS is still widely used today whether for engaging in personal conversations, distributing announcements, or verifying a user’s identity (Petronzio). One early method of texting that is still in use today is T9. This predictive text system assigns the letters of the alphabet to the numbers on the face of the phone, often assigning 3 or more letters to each number. When these buttons are pressed, the phone tries to predict what letters the user wants to enter based on the phone’s dictionary. For example, if the user presses the button that has the letters “abc” twice and presses the button that has the letters “rst” once, the phone might predict the user is entering “a”, then “ab”, then either “car” or “cat” depending on whether the user has entered car or cat more often in the past. At the start, the first very basic mobile phones gave us the power of audio communication while being on the move and not tied to any wires.
