Films Message

The message of the movie is that hard work takes time, but it pays off. This is shown through the many obstacles that Michelangelo and Pope Julius faced during the painting of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling.

Plot

The movie starts off with Pope Julius ii and his men winning a battle. When he goes through town everyone bows down to him, showing respect. He comes across Michelangelo an recognizes his sculpting skills and how his tomb still is not in the process of being made. Later on he then assigns him the task of painting the Sistine Chapel's ceiling. At first he was opposed to the idea for he was a sculptor, but soon enough agreed to it because of th rewards.

When he first started he destroyed is art on the ceiling because he didn't want to simply painting the 12 disciples, he wanted to show more. He takes it upon himself to draw up new plans and show the Pope during a dangerous battle. His idea got approved and he went forward with his painting, although he didn't see himself as a good painter. Throughout the many years that the painting took place there where many ups and downs between the Pope and Michelangelo, he even ran away at one point. Through the long days of rigorous work he constantly got ask by the Pope “when will you be done” and his response was always “When I am done”. This was a very iconic …show more content…

The editing done in the movie was for the most part decent, but there were some issues. For example, some of the sound effects such as the boulder talked about above didn’t match its landing sound. However there were some background noises that made the movie more realistic. Such as the men in battle yelling and the animal noises that Michelangelo heard when he was walking down the street. Other than the edits dealing with time there were some editing done to the locations that were not realistic. Such as the sky, also talked about above. Overall the editing wasn't the best and could have been

What this sentence is basically saying is that the whole painting of the Sistine chapel was meant to embody the ideas of the religious mentality that was embedded into the minds of the people during the renaissance period. When Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the celling of the Sistine chapel, he wanted it to solely represent the ideals and teachings of the church, however Michelangelo portrayed some of his own thoughts into the art. Examples of this can be found all over the painting the last testament and in the book titled Michelangelo A Life in Six Masterpieces by Miles J. Unger, upon examination of the painting it is possible to see on the bottom right hand corner the Pope himself with a snake wrapped around him and being dragged to hell. Historians believed that Michelangelo painted the Pope in this way because he did not agree with the way Pope Julius II was running the church, Michelangelo and the Pope often disagreed on many different occasions whether it be on religion or just the way he talked to Michelangelo. Throughout the last testament Michelangelo actually painted homosexual men all around the painting, and he did not paint them burning in hell, instead he painted them in heaven along with Jesus

Michelangelo’s fresco the Last Judgment (1536-1541) is a piece that visualizes this idea. Since the time it was finished, this significant piece found in the Sistine Chapel has been continuously critiqued and analyzed. Many Christians struggle to interpret the event of a final judgment after reading it through Scripture. In analyzing Michelangelo’s piece, it is similar difficult to determine what he exactly meant to portray and what the various part of his masterpiece represent exactly. Many have examined this piece and made different regarding what exactly the various figures and objects are supposed to represent. The diverse interpretations of this work further shows the idea that when Christian ideas are reflected through artwork, it is hard to ascertain exactly what an artist intended to demonstrate. In addition, the controversies surrounding this piece represent the idea that when Christian ideas are revealed through art, there is potential for disagreement regarding what should and should not be included in Christian art. Michelangelo’s Last Judgment is just an example of what results when Christianity is brought into art.

    As I walked up the street toward the front of Grace Cathedral, I was in awe at the size and ornateness of this cathedral. It was tall and wide and looked very much like the churches we had been studying in class in the prior weeks. These are the main cathedral doors made out of bronze, and are replicas of the originals which stood centuries ago at the east entrance to the Baptistry of Florence Cathedral (the Duomo) Italy. After I had finished looking at the Ghiberti Doors, I entered through one of the side doors, since you are not able to use the Ghiberti Doors, because they weight too much. Before I stepped inside the cathedral, I pulled out my text analysis and read over it, so that when I entered I could examine whether or not this cathedral exuded the same sacredness as the cathedral in the text analysis. I feel this Cathedral really does exude not entirely the purity of heaven, but does seem to somewhat separate you from the outer world, as Abbot Suger spoke of. Also, it brings in some of the surrounding beauty from St. Denis, such as the sapphire and stained glass, as well as the gold plating.

    For example, in the sychronized swimming scene, many different camera angles were used. Some parts of this scene were shot from above, the side, from below which was interesting as that 's not something often seen. When Deanna Moran was coming out of the water, a bit of that scene was shot from her perspective and then cut to an above angle. This showed off the cinematography quite well and made the movie look artistic at times. The only complaint about the movie I would have is some of the editing. A few scenes were dragged on a bit too long and could have been edited to be a bit shorter. The scene where Ralph Fiennes character, Laurence Laurentz, was showing Hobbie Doyle how to say a line correctly was incredibly funny at first, but was carried on too long. The scene lasted approximately one minute, which doesn 't seem too long, but when the scene focuses on one small joke it feels like five minutes. Mysterious scenes were dimly lit, which worked sufficiently. When Baird Whitlock is kidnapped and just wakes up, he has no idea where he is and the lighting doesn 't brighten until he is told why he has been kidnapped and by who. The lighting was also cleverly used during the scene where DeAnna Moran explains to Eddie Mannix she wants to hide her pregnancy. Shadows are casted over their faces and the room is quite dark. The characters are even wearing hats that cover the top of their eyes to add to the secretive

    Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564) was an Italian poet, architect, painter and sculptor. Not only was he thought to be the greatest artist during his lifetime but he has also been thought to be one of the greatest artists of all time (Gilbert). The Florence Cathedral asked him to complete an abandoned commission from a giant block of marble, to depict yet another David to be a symbol of Florence, and was to be placed on the gable of the Cathedral. Michelangelo finished the giant 17’ statue in 1504. It never made it up on the Cathedral but instead was placed in the Piazza della Signoria and is now in the Gallery of the Academy of Florence while a replica stands in the square. Like the other two David’s, this statue uses the classic contrapposto stance. Also like Donatello’s, Michelangelo depicted the classical nude but with an athletic physique. Unlike Donatello and Verrocchio’s statues though, which show the hero’s triumph and Goliath’s head at their feet, Michelangelo chose to show David before the battle. He portrays the young warrior with his sling in his left hand over his shoulder and a rock in his right, which he is starting to clench.
