The sole purpose of our study is to identify whether or not an association is present between a missing parent and behavior problems amongst children following into adulthood. A single survey requests substantial amounts of personal information as it relates to the absence of a parent and behavioral problems which follow. Surveys collected data on 203 subjects, ranging in ages (18+), participation was strictly voluntary and questions related to any behavioral problems during adolescence or adulthood. Each survey included a precise set of questions each pertaining to an individual's past behaviors. By identifying a direct connection between parents either present or not and behavioral problems will allow professionals to better understand the whys behind each subject's behavior. Knowledge of specific vulnerabilities is essential in allocating a greater awareness for the individual. The study will create a lot of positive feedback because of its ability in assisting communities for development of better treatment programs for future generations to come. More importantly, improvement in counseling methods overall can result as well as having more accessible therapies for individuals. For a representative sample we traveled to separate regions in El Paso exclusively looking for participants; two at planet fitness gyms (eastside and westside), few recreational parks (eastside and westside), two gas stations (Northeast and Central), and four department stores (Best Buy-Eastside, Macy’s-West Side, Dillards-Westside, Target-Eastside). Additionally, University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and few grocery stores (Eastside and Westside) with the purpose of our data collection to illustrate various spread over large surface areas covered in El Paso. Surveys conducted were strictly expressed as confidential, private, and anonymous at all times. A large number of surveys were completed over the internet, via Google accounts, Facebook accounts, Linkedn profiles and few participants on Twitter. Several subjects expressed critical time constraints being an issues which resulted in non participation status of survey. Although, these subjects expressed interest in a preference for participation via the internet. Parenting styles refer to a set of different manners in which parents raise their children. There are four parenting styles including authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. The authoritarian parenting style is based on the implementation of rules, and on the idea that all rules should be followed without exceptions. Similarly, authoritative parenting style implements rules, but the child feelings are taken in consideration and reasonable exceptions to the rule are allowed. On the other hand, in permissive parenting style, there is implementation of rules, but they are rarely encouraged to be followed. Parents and their parenting style play an important role in the development of their child. In fact, many child experts suggest that parenting style can affect a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological development which influence not just their childhood years, but it will also extend throughout their adult life. This is because a child’s development takes place through a number of stimuli, interaction, and exchanges that surround him or her. And since parents are generally a fixed presence in a child’s life, they will likely have a significant part on the child’s positive or negative development (Gur 25).
The parent I interviewed is a 28-year-old woman, in a relationship with the father of her 1-year-old baby girl. I asked the parent 8 questions. When asking the parent questions, I let them answer confidently first, then gave a scenario or oppositional view and asked how they felt afterward. Once she answered the first few questions, I instantly placed her under one parenting style category according to Baumrind: authoritative. It was really easy to see how the parent was thinking as a mother and that the intention of having the child’s best interest, was available. I was also able to anticipate the child is gonna be securely attached according to Ainsworth, due to the parent due to the mother having a securely attached relationship to her mother.
The most apparent social and environmental factors are manifested in where children are raised and the style of parenting they are subjected to as explained by the Attachment Theory. Although there are various definitions of attachment, they all communicate its critical role in human development. Emotional well-being is a critical part of psychological development and parents and caregivers should act as stress buffers for their children rather than sources of stress (Immordino-Yang & Damasio, 2011). The direct implication is that parents bear the greatest responsibility in terms of how children develop psychologically and are accountable to a significant extent of their future lives. Hence, this program is informed by the knowledge that an individual’s behavior, emotional intelligence, academic achievements, social relationships and life outcomes are influenced by the relationships they had with their parents. An effective way to ensure that children grow up while developing positively psychologically is to encourage parents and caregivers to be involved as much as possible in their lives from an early stage. According to Dr. Murray Bowen, the family systems theory suggests that individuals cannot be understood in isolation from one another, but rather as a part of their family, as the family is an emotional unit. I did my parent-child observation at a restaurant in Batesville Indiana. I went to a small family owned place called Wagner’s. I did my observation over Thanksgiving break after my family cut our Christmas tree down. This occurred on Saturday November 28th around 6pm. This is a place that I am relatively familiar with. I have been going there with my family every year since I was a young child. It is a pretty small restaurant. While one side has a bar, the other side is more family oriented. It is a child friendly place that has a small area that toddlers and young kids can play. It has coloring books and small toys.
