Communication: the words we speak, see, and create to inform others of our ideas and intentions. The written word is but one facet of this action, and one, that if improperly used, can lead to various problems of miscommunication. What we speak can be forgotten, what we see or read can be misunderstood, but what we write and show the world may never be fully erased. What and how we write is especially important in today’s world as more and more communication takes place on the internet. While many may enable speech by way of microphones connected to their computers, the very staple of online communication remains writing. While not only important in cyberspace, good writing skills are an essential attribute on the job, trying to further education, or just jotting down a note with instructions to a babysitter.
The internet. The world-wide link of endless knowledge connecting people across the globe. According to the Email Etiquette article from About.com via a UCLA Internet Report, “Almost 88 percent of all Internet users in the U.S. use email” (McKay 2010). I know internet t...
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, it is reported, "25% of high school seniors are proficient writers" (Cullington, 362). Jacquie Ream, a former teacher and author for K.I.S.S. expands on this statistic by stating, "we have a whole generation being raised without communication" (Cullington, 362). By this, Ream means that we as people are not physically socializing with each other, but yet using devices to replace the way we talk and express our feelings to one another instead. Ream then goes on to blame the use of acronyms and shorthand in text messages as the downfall of writing skills. Here, Ream means that because of lack of proper language we have become careless when writing. Naomi Baron, a professor at American University, states that America as a whole has become sloppy with the mechanics of writing due to texting. Both teachers in Michaela's article agree that the essence of texting is responsible for the oversight of punctuation, lack of emotion, and lastly a rise in grammatical errors in formal
In The Power of Writing by Joel Swerdlow, we are presented to the importance of writing to our civilization. Throughout the years written information has emerged as a primary method of communication. Individuals use whatever is available to write to convey their message. Early forms of writing include carving symbols in stone and bone, written leaves, silk, papyrus, parchment and paper. At the present time writing is used in many settings; for example we have books, text messages, online blogs, lyrics, street signs and emails. There are no limits to written information, and most importantly it can be preserved indefinitely. Writing helps me communicate to others, my identity, creativity and imagination. Individually, I use writing to compose lyrics, write about my personal experiences and to connect with my family. In my opinion, writing is an important tool of communication in my personal and professional development, because it gives an insight of my individual ideas.
Today’s generation’s methods of reading, writing, and communicating are changing dramatically because of novel information and communication technologies, ICTs. With the evolution of social networks like Facebook and Twitter, text messaging, instant messaging, e-mails, blogs, and other websites and technologies, youth are communicating in a significantly different way than past generations. Sheelah M. Sweeny (2010) states in her article Writing for the Instant Messaging and Text Messaging Generation: Using New Literacies to Support Writing Instruction that, “Teachers may be concerned about the way some students write using these different ICTs, imagining the potential negative impact their students’ academic writing, but this interest can be an instructional advantage” (p. 121). The basis of Writing for the Instant Messaging and Text Messaging Generation: Using New Literacies to Support Writing Instruction is to provide teachers with a definition of new literacies and a rationale to introduce and use new literacies and ICTs in their classrooms.
While preparing for one of his college lectures, Dennis Baron, a professor and linguistics at the University of Illinois, began playing with the idea of how writing has changed the world we lived in and materials and tools we use in everyday life. This lecture slowly transitioned into “Should Everybody Write?” An article that has made many wonder if technology has made writing too easy for anyone to use or strengthens a writer's ability to learn and communicate their ideas. Baron uses rhetorical strategies in his article to portray to his audience his positive tone, the contrast and comparison of context and his logical purpose.
They are becoming more intelligent through technology. People use these skills in their workplaces everyday in order to be more successful, these videogames are helping to prepare the under thirty generation for a brighter future. There is a lot of communication that goes on in these games between players and this helps to strengthen their social skills. In the workplace, these teenagers and young adults can use those skills that will help to improve their self-confidence when they know how to communicate with others. Andrea Lunsford, a professor of writing and rhetoric at Stanford University, conducted a study on her students about their all the writing they do in and out of the classroom. “The first thing she found is that young people today write far more than any generation before them. That is because so much socialising takes place online, and it almost always involves text. Of all the writing that the Stanford students did, a stunning 38 percent of it took place out of the classroom” (Source G). She found that young people write more than any generation before them proving that we have skills in writing and that we have developed more than the previous generations. The
Any craftsman knows that you need the right tools to complete a project successfully. Similarly, people need the right language and usage to communicate in a positive way. How people write is often a problem because they don’t have the right tools, but a bigger problem occurs when a writer “is almost indifferent as to whether his words mean anything at all” (592). If a writer carries this mentality, why try to communicate in the first place? People need...
In the article, “Writing in the 21st Century,” Kathleen Yancey spells out how writing has evolved over the years. The author takes us through some key events that shaped writing into what it is today. Yancey brings the reader back to when writing was something that rarely happened outside of the classroom. “Reading …tended to produce feelings of intimacy and warmth, while writing, by way of contrast, was associated with unpleasantness – with unsatisfying work and episodes of despair – and thus evoked a good deal of ambivalence,” (Yancey 2). It was a tedious exercise that happened in schools. Over the years, writing was slowly encouraged, even if it was just a letter you were writing to someone. In the 21st century, there are now more outlets for writing. Yancey shows how writing is being expanded from just paper and pencil to online blogging and social networking. “We have multiple models of composing operating simultaneously, each informed by ne publication practices, new materials and new vocabulary,” (Yancey 7). This has encouraged writing to become more creative but also made it less organized. Yancey proves in the article that there is yet to be a perfect style of writing but we will keep working and gradually improving on writing.

A person’s language is the way unique ideas and meaningful thoughts are put into words. However, the true thoughts and emotions comprised of a person’s brain cannot always be expressed through words and this is when the importance of writing is embraced and becomes a reality. Peter Elbow states, “The words will be ruined if they come out of the mouth instead of on paper. Speaking, uses up or dissipates one’s vital fluids for writing” and this addresses the effect and importance of writing in today’s language (Elbow 358). Language and writing have an immense power in the world because of the power writing creates within the English language. The power allows writing to convey the world and put forth a message that could not be expressed
Writing is an essential to our everyday lives and is also a form of expression,
Few would argue with the statement that writing skills are in state of decline. It is readily apparent that something needs to be done to resolve the issues that are preventing students from grasping the fundamentals of composition. However, there is a divergence of opinion when it comes to determining the cause of the nation’s writing ails. Many blame technology, giving cell phones and television particular attention. Others give technology a more indirect blame, claiming that email, instant messaging, and cell phones have robbed students of a desire to learn proper writing skills. While these ideas may bear some truth, the root of the problem lies within the instruction of writing, which to a large extent is ineffective. The writing problems faced by students and adults alike are the direct result of ineffective methods of instruction in composition.
The internet has influenced, and is still influencing the way society communicates in many different ways. The rise of the internet has caused people to communicate differently in areas never dreamed of before the internet came into existence.
