Misguided Messages in The Awakening and A Doll's House
Just because a novel is considered a classic doesn't mean the
Messages it conveys to its readers are correct. Even though both The
Awakening by Kate Chopin and A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen are great
literary works, some of the ideas embodied in them aren't appropriate.
Both works suggest that it is common for husbands to be condescending to
their wives; that if a person has enough money, they can have someone else
raise their children for them; and that if a marriage gets hard, the couple
should just give up on each other.
Taking the stories for their literary qualities alone, they are
both quite good. Both novels are very well written. Chopin and Ibsen
developed their characters well, used excellent imagery, and told
interesting stories. Both shared their strong convictions even though they
knew their ideas weren't popular. The strong beliefs that are shared in
these stories are part of what makes them classics.
However, some of the ideas that are portrayed in these works aren't
ideas readers should assume to be true or good. The first of these is the
theory that husbands will most likely treat their wives as inferiors after
they are married. In A Doll's House, Torvald is blatantly condescending to
Nora. He calls her his ³little squirrel² or ³little skylark² and requires
her to ³do tricks² to please him. In addition, he treats her like a child,
a ³feather head² who can't understand anything important. In The Awakening,
Leonce is more subtle in his mistreatment of his wife. He tries to control
Edna by pushing his point until she does what he wants. He also tries to
make her feel bad about herself. For example, he tells her she isn't a
good mother to their sons. Although this type of behavior is condemned in
both of these stories, just characterizing this behavior as normal sends a
bad message. If young men are repeatedly told that this is how adult males
act, they will inevitably feel that they should act this way when they are
married.
The second bad idea conveyed by these stories is that if a person
can afford to, they should have someone else raise their children for them.
In A Doll's House, Nora and Torvald have a nanny who takes care of their
children for them. This is the same nanny who Nora's parents had paid to
raise her. Also, in The Awakening, Leonce and Edna not only have a person
who takes care of their children for them; but, when Edna moves to the

While Edna may be considered a risk taker, it is easy to see that the risk Nora, in A Doll's House takes far greater risks. While it is clear that Nora's husband does not see her as a person with a mind for anything beyond decoration, the reader quickly sees that Nora knows far more than maybe she should know. Torvald constantly shows his superiority over his wife with the use of "pet" names such as: "my little dove" or "chipmunk.
The stories “I Stand Here Ironing” by Tillie Olsen and “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, are different in many ways, but are also similar. “I Stand Here Ironing” and “Everyday Use” both focus on the relationships of the mother and daughter, and on the sibling’s relationships with each other. Emily from “I Stand Here Ironing” and Maggie from “Everyday Use” have different relationships with their mothers, but have similar relationships with their sisters. Although the stories are similar in that Emily and Maggie are both distant from their sisters, they differ in that the mother is distant from Emily in “I Stand Here Ironing,” while the mother is close to Maggie in “Everyday Use.”

Society places normalities upon its people in order to maintain stability and often times, tradition. More specifically, gender roles, such as women raising children; men being the only source of profit, must also be broken in order to establish uniqueness and distinction in a conventional- themed culture, such as Victorian society. Kate Chopin’s The Awakening is perhaps the only novel that fully illustrates the struggle that is leaving Victorian ideals and tradition from a woman’s perspective. Although often considered a feminist text, The Awakening can be viewed as a novel that depicts and promotes individuality using symbolism. Instead of plastering readers with dull literalism, Chopin uses symbols, such birds and music, to relay subtle ideas. Within each fictive part, Chopin provides symbolism that readers must comprehend in order to appreciate the novel as a whole.
The play “A Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen starts in the Helmer’s home on Christmas Eve. At the beginning of the play, the audience is introduced to Nora Helmer, the woman of the household. Nora is completely delighted with her life, and feels favorable for the way her life is coming along. She looks forward to the New Year when her husband starts his new job as a bank manager, where he will “have a big salary and earn lots and lots of money” (Ibsen 1350). Torvald Helmer, her husband, teases her and treats her like a child who is incapable. Nora responds to her husband’s actions with pure affection and does not seem to mind her controlled doll-like life. In the play Ibsen creates the setting in the late 1800s where women took care of the household, family, and children. Men saw women as delicate, innocent, unknowledgeable, and uneducated in the business world. Symbolism plays a large role in comprehending the play. The Christmas tree, the Tarantella, and the New Year are symbols that unveil the life of the characters and what they stand for.

Nora is unhappy with her life, as though her expressions and actions show otherwise. She grows to realize her problem and settles with the idea that she never will be. Several symbols are made to stand out but four more particularly than others.
In Ibsen's "A Doll's House", there are many clues that hint at the kind of marriage Nora and Torvald have. It seems that Nora is a type of doll that is controlled by Torvald. Nora is completely dependent on Torvald. His thoughts and movements are her thoughts and movements. Nora is a puppet who is dependent on its puppet master for all of its actions.

Not only does Torvald see her as his doll, but also as her child (quote near end of story). By keeping Nora dependent and obedient to him, he plays the role of Nora’s second father. Nora eventually sees that her daughter is being treated in the same manner that she was her entire life, as a doll.
