Concept Paper There are many elements that make up the minority status which fall into two different categories. The two categories are student and academic. The main elements fall into the academic category which are things like race, ethnicity, social status and stratification, discrimination, underrepresentation, domination, and stigmatization. These are the main concepts for the minority status. Subordination is one of the major concepts when it comes to minority status. Subordination is the act of placing in a lower rank or position which is something that has been going on all throughout the history of mankind. It happens everywhere in the world today. Humans are not born with a gene that makes them racist. Personalities are usually shaped in peoples life’s when they are young and it is common to take on views of the people that are around us. If we are exposed to racist opinions when we are young, they will be taken on. Racism can be devolved as a cultural ideology. There are many stereotypes and people are very quick to judge. Racism is a belief that one race is superior to another and people will see another race as inferior. Social and moral traits are assumed based on biological characteristics. Racism has had a huge impact in our history but one of the most notorious examples of racism was Slavery. The enslavement happened because of racist beliefs towards Black Africans and how they were seen as less fully human. Racial segregation in the United States happened at schools, trying to receive medical care, employment, and transportation. Segregation was legal at one point in the United States because of Plessy vs. Ferguson in 1896 but finally was made illegal again because of Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954.
