Minors are at risk in public places and online when with groups of people. Parents and other adults are responsible for keeping them safe from illegal and troublesome content on the internet. Their risks include harassment, bullying, sexual solicitation and exposure to illegal materials. Sexting, or sending sexual photos or messages puts the exposed minor at risk, as well as the person who receives the picture/message. They seem to be unaware of the personal and legal consequences involved in this behavior. Parents need to know who children are talking to and what they are posting online, limit internet usage, have clear expectations, and have a plan for safety. The internet is part of many minors’ daily lives in the USA. Though it can be a positive, and powerful experience where they can learn and socialize and find entertainment, it can expose them to online risks. They can be harassed, bullied, solicited for sex, and find themselves knee deep in illegal content that causes them problems. and bullying, sexual solicitation, and exposure to problematic and illegal content. The risks are similar to off-line risks, but there are more opportunities for at risk minors to encounter them, and makes it more difficult for adults to realize they need help. Sexting puts the exposed minor at risk, as well as the person who receives the picture/message. The online environment provides a shield of invisibility for minors who may not hold power in face-to-face interactions, and may provide them a new medium of power when they decide to bully. Online bullying can be more extreme because the bully cannot see the victims’ reactions, and therefore they don’t know when to stop.
