Mimosa Play Analysis

On the afternoon of September 16th, I went to see the matinee showing at the Cookeville Performing Arts Center of a play called He is Near: A True Story of Amy Carmichael and the God She Shared in India. Overall, this play was a very good show and there were some very good things about it which I will share. It was a very uplifting story about how a missionary shared her faith with the people of Dohnavur in India. Much more than that, it was about how her work spread through the people to this one girl in particular, Mimosa. She is put through trials and temptations throughout her life, but she keeps her faith close to her. Firstly, I really liked how the whole style of the production helped to immerse me in the play. I really liked the part of the play where they were at the temple scene and there were plenty of actors walking through, talking and doing business, like at a real temple. They talked and created the commotion of town and had rickshaw carts going through. I also really enjoyed the performance by Juliana Sweat as older Mimosa. You could just see the anguish and longing on her face as she went through the struggles of losing her son and trying to keep her faith at the same time. You could also hear the struggle in her voice as she begged her sons not to go with their father to the temple. She was also a great singer as well. I thought it was nice to have the character Yosépu in the story as well to create a little comedy in all of the seriousness of the play. One of the things I did not like was the song choices. There were a lot of songs for one play, and one of the songs was sung eight times. It was the main song, so I respect the choice for singing it so much, but it just seemed a little redundant to me and made the play drag
