U.S. Militia vs. Taliban: Same Ideals or Very Different?
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) describes terrorism as “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives” (28 C.E.R. Section 0.85).
Background
Comparing and contrasting a U.S. based militia to the Taliban may seem like a far reach. However, there are very similar ideologies that both share. The Taliban was formed from a group of Sunni fundamentalist Muslim militants. Some are members from the ranks of the mujahedeen who fought back and beat the Soviet military incursion into Afghanistan in the early 1980s. The ideological aim of the Taliban is to reestablish an “austere and uncompromisingly puritanical Islamic state in Afghanistan” (Johns, 2016) otherwise known as Shira Islamic law based on Deobandi fundamentalism. They border on xenophobia with their hatred of ‘Westernized’ ideals and the modernism it brings. The Taliban originated from the Mujahedeen alliance after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 as a politico-religious force and resistance movement to eject the Soviet troops.

The greatest threat to the U.S. between these two groups, would be the homegrown militias over the Taliban. At this time, the Taliban seems content to try and rid itself of the ‘infidels’ from its country of Afghanistan. The attacks occurring overseas have been on those supporting the Western forces and its ideals or what the West stands for. If this paper had discussed the terrorist group, ISIS or Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, then there would be no contest at who would pose the greatest
