Kayla Conner - Response to Sanders and American Mythology on Migration Migration and settlement are two key elements to the evolution of the humankind. They are connected, yet separate because they simultaneously work to evolve the human race while accomplishing different goals. Therefore, the values of both migration and settlement lie in different corners of evolution of humankind. Due to the fact that the value of migration lies in only the physical transfer of people, culture and ideas while the value of settlement lies in the actual assimilation of people, culture, and ideas, settlement bears a slightly larger value in the advancement of humankind. Firstly, the impact that migration had on the advancement of the human race is solely the physical transfer of people, culture, and ideas. People migrate for different reasons. But, the human race cannot. To be able to settle, one has to find a place to settle. To find a place to settle, one has to move until one finds a place that will be sufficient for him or her to survive and grow as not only as a member of a community, but also as an individual. However, the finding of a sufficient place means absolutely nothing if the resources of the place are not used to their full potential and to the best of the settler’s abilities. If one does not use the resources, then one cannot make discoveries about the place. This means that the individual cannot evolve, the communities cannot evolve, and, ultimately, humankind cannot evolve. In this case, migration would exist, but it would have no meaning. Settlement is what puts meaning into migration. Settlement, consequently, holds a higher value in the advancement of humankind because not only does it make a meaning for itself, but it makes a meaning for migration because, migration can simply exist, but it will not serve a specific purpose until one purposefully
