Health organizations require the leadership and direction provided by effective management to achieve set goals and improve patient outcomes. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare system has evolved into a complex industry, making healthcare management one of the fastest growing occupations. Therefore, with the increase in demand for managers, health organizations are more likely to thrive if the managers on board have a good understanding of their roles irrespective of the level of management they occupy, and know the similarities and differences that exist in these roles.
Healthcare management is the profession that provides leadership and direction to organizations that deliver personal health services, and to divisions, departments, units or services within those organizations. Most health organizations have a hierarchical organizational structure in form of a pyramid, such that there are many lower level managers, fewer middle level managers and the fewest number of upper level managers. The responsibility of the middle level of management is to plan the most efficient ways of executing directives from the upper level management and engaging the lower level management in implementing the plan. Also, managers are devoted to coordinating departments, ensuring that organizational and directional functions proceed seamlessly and efficiently. An important function of the middle management is the dissemination of information between the upper and lower levels and making recommendations to the upper level management, thereby enhancing communication and workflow in the organization.
