The Middle Ages came to an end due to several factors, the Black Death ravishing most of Europe and Italy, famine from over population and climate change, long wars, and revolts among peasants. These factors lead to the beginning of the Renaissance era around the year 1450. Soldiers were coming home from the Crusades and left behind the old cultures and styles of music. The soldiers brought with them a desire for the arts and ideas of ancient Greece and Rome; they also felt that wealthy men should be well educated including learning music. With the Turks, taking control of the Byzantine Empire the wealthy educated people also traveled to Italy bringing with them the images of the ancient cultures. At this time the feudal system was slowly going away due in part to the revolting and the rise of the monarch, system with representatives and parliaments were on the rise. The new systems of rulers were influenced by the elite class as well as the merchant’s class who had money. With money came power and they used that power to make changes such as commission new buildings and paintings. The earlier music was heavily focused on spiritual matters of the church. New music was being created by composers who created religious music as well as secular music. This period also saw the invention of new instruments, which benefited the composers. With the new music, the composers wrote songs that were sung by larger choirs and a few were written for more than one choir to perform at the same time.
