Technology influences every aspect of modern life. Medicine has advanced, social media has taken off, communication methods have expanded, paying bills has been made more efficient, and career opportunities have broadened all as a result of technology. The effect of technology is even greater with teenagers. It is now uncommon to pass a teenager without seeing a cell phone or iPod in hand. With this comes advantages and disadvantages. Technology influences teenagers’ development of social skills, awareness of world events, mental and physical health, and education. These aspects can be explored through multiple media avenues. Michele Ybarra, MPH, Ph.D., discusses the positive effect of technology on the mental and physical health of teenagers. She begins her argument by stating headlines from news outlets that “have made parents understandably anxious about their teen’s internet use” (Ybarra). Her first paragraph serves as the counterargument; she questions and defends her position starting in the second paragraph. She summarizes her opinion by saying that “the Web can actually be beneficial for teens” (Ybarra). Ybarra provides support by explaining how LGB youth can receive encouragement and guidance via the internet. Young people who need information but may be too embarrassed to ask parents or other adults can also use the internet as a resource. The subject transitions to physical health. Ybarra uses an allusion and appeals to ethos when she refers to “a smoking cessation via text message program aimed at young adults” developed by the Center for Innovative Public Health Research. One of the teachers states how she was skeptical in the beginning because it is difficult for teachers to monitor students when technology is involved, but the use of iPads in the classroom is now appealing to her. Students who are interviewed provide convincing arguments in favor of the technology. They claim that the iPads are “eco-friendly,” “help with organization skills” because they cannot lose or forget assignments or books, and “are really easy to use” (Morristown High School). The video effectively communicates the intended message through the use of personal comments from students, concrete examples, and insight from the perspective of teachers. The Huffington Post published an article in which the author tackles the connection between technology and the social skills of teens. Debra Fine, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and trainer, begins the article with a reference to technology as a “curse” or a “crutch” (Fine). She uses a short anecdote to illustrate when the use of a cell phone is appropriate and convenient. After her counterargument, she returns to discussing her stance on the issue.
