According to www.miamigov.com, the City of Miami Building Department is responsible for overseeing the development of infrastructure within the City of Miami through the enforcement of state and county developed codes and regulations in order to ensure that new and existing structures are constructed and maintained properly. The Building Department issues building permits, performs inspections of current construction, and investigates complaints regarding the safety of existing structures. The Office of the Director is responsible for managing departmental activities and developing department policies. The Office of the Director essentially acts as the coordinative entity of the Building Department. Employees of Inspection Services must be properly informed of department policy in order to correctly carry out inspection activities. Coordination between the Building Department and other City of Miami organizations, such as the Historic Preservation Department, is also essential. Without lateral coordination between organizations, these departments wouldn’t be able to perform their jobs as efficiently. For example, the History Preservation Department must be aware of currently building codes and regulations to ensure that the necessary renovations of historical sites are completed in order to maintain the safety of those structures. The number of building codes and regulations is also likely to increase as new, safer methods are discovered. Building technologies will eventually change to allow greater inhabitance of smaller areas. There is already a lack of available space to continue building new infrastructure in Miami; therefore, it is important that existing structures be properly maintained. The lack of space may also cause the cost of permits to go in order to decrease the motivation of potential builders who don’t have adequate funding to successfully complete their project. We believe that the plan reviewing and inspection services will expand due to the growing need for renovation permits. On another note, The City of Miami Building Department’s Facebook page possess reviews from recent customers that highlights the difficulty of dealing with the department; nearly all of the reviews are negative. In addition to the reviews on Facebook, a YouTube video was also created that shows the three sections of this organizations office, while also documenting the source of some of the issues that people have with this department’s customer service. The video shows the contractors’ section where customers receive their number in line, the administrative office, and the cashier (Crossstreetbroadcast, 2010).
