Within the United States there is a huge diversity of cultures. Culture is many different things, it is a tradition, it is the values and beliefs passed down from generation to generation, and culture is the identity of any country. Culture helps to identify one cultural group from the other. Although we may live in the same country,city, or state we still differ from one another by the way we dress, our beliefs, language, traditions, music, art, food, religion, and politics. Although the United States share a common border with Mexico there are many differences within their cultures. In Maria’s family they are very close to one another, despite the problems that may arise they still remain close. She compared their family dynamics to those in the United States, she states that American families are not as close, which I have to agree. Given an example, the typical American adult is considered legal once they become 18 years old. Some families force their children to move out once they are 18 or they give them verbatim of getting a job or to stay in school. In Maria’s family and other Mexican families being 18 does not mean anything. Their family controls them until they leave house, and only expect the child to move if they get married, go away to college, or find a job far from home. Men are given the roles of taking care of the family but she said because of the many opportunities for women in America, the women of Mexican decent is breaking away from the “norm”. In America the men are also considered the dominant ones in the family but do to a change in social norms many American women are also becoming more independent and providing for their families. The most famous tradition Maria and her family celebrates is El Dia de Muertos and Quinceras. El Dia de Muertos is a tradition that comes from the native Indians.
