Edgar Allen Poe must have been one of the best writers of his time. He wrote amazing stories, but sometimes the ending keeps you guessing. His poem, Annabel Lee, was written about a girl whom he loved very deeply, but you wouldn’t think that some of the objects and people in his story were metaphors for things much bigger. Basically, almost everything is a metaphor for another in Poe’s writings. Sometimes people skip over some metaphors because they don’t think into it far enough. Looking into a story gives you another perspective on what’s being written. Poe used metaphors to make more of the love him and Annabel Lee shared. Poe writes in his poem, “I was a child and she was a child,”. (7) This quotation could be taken two ways. The first way, and the most common way is thinking that he is saying that they were young. Analyzing it further, the quotation can show that he means him and Annabel Lee had an innocent love. Early in the poem Poe writes, “That a maiden there lived whom you may know by the name of Annabel Lee,” (3-4). Reading this, the reader may think that Annabel Lee is widely known and maybe even famous. Annabel probably wasn't famous, because he thinks so highly of her, he thinks that everyone knows who she is. He thinks to himself that Annabel Lee is so beautiful and amazing, how could anyone not know who she is? Also, in the beginning of line 3 Poe states that she is a maiden. Being a maiden, she is probably a virgin. Now, going back a little, when Poe writes, “I was a child and she was a child,” (7), what he really means by this is that their love was innocent.
