Synopsis This poem is by Alberto Rios. He uses an old Russian\ that has a metaphorical plum sitting in his throat, that finally spits out when his wife leaves him. It shows that it was a relief instead of a sorrow. Alberto uses imagery when he examines the fruit “notes that its purplish consistency almost the color and shape of her buttocks whose circulation was bad”. He also uses quite a few similes, one being “He shoots the plum to the ground like a child whose confidence is a game of marbles.” Alberto’s poem is a free verse. He has no rhyme scheme or meter to it at all. If it had one it just wouldn't make sense. He did it to show that there was no rhythm or structure with how things were in his life. The first stanza begins with the speaker describing their failed attempt at eliminating the pests. The first attempt was described as merciful: ?The knockout bomb from the Feed and Grain Exchange was featured as merciful, quick at the bone?. However, the following lines offer a bit of humor to the chase as it seems the woodchuck has outsmarted the speaker as a result of their overconfidence: ?and the case we had against them was airtight, both exits shoehorned shut with puddingstone, but they had a sub-sub-basement out of range.? This first stanza sets the stage for what would appear to be a humorous battle of whits between the speaker and the woodchucks.

    This poem has a kept form. Even at a glance, it has a set form. It consists of four quatrains, each line being an iambic tritameter. The poem is about a young boy waltzing with his father. One can assume that the speaker is a young boy, or perhaps the poet reminiscing his youth. The father dances around in a haphazard manner, knocking over pans in the kitchen. Upon first glance, the tone is humorous. The picture one immediately forms is rather comical with the boy clinging on for dear life as his chuckling father spins him round and round, making a mess in the kitchen while the mother looks on discontentedly. However, the line, "whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy" suggests the father's drunkedness and "at every step you missed my right ear scraped buckle" suggests the dance was not an altogether joyful one. Lines such as "hung on like death", and "beat time on my head" are might even lead the reader to think the father is abusive of the boy.
