The Metamorphosis is a among Franz Kafka’s famous stories. The story is about a haunted man who changed into an insect. The author has written the story based on various theories such as Marxism, existentialist and religious views. It is also a reflection of a hostile world with major themes being abandonment, self-alienation, and troubles relationship. It reveals people’s struggles while in the modern society where one is neglected in the time of need (Franz 8). The cultural and social setting of the story helps in supporting the major themes of the story. In as much as the story is a dramatic fiction, it is necessary to explore the interior monologue style in order to inform the audience what the protagonist is thinking.

Samsa’s thoughts highlight “this town is full of hatred and hostility, especially when my parents abandon and treat me poorly. It is a shame that some people’s economic statuses in the town make it difficult for them to fit in the society. I imagine the historic, cultural and social context of the story is based on some ominous creature. I believe that my role in the society is based on historical processes that I am unaware. I believe that the ethnic tension between three groups that were the Jews, Czechs, and Germans affects societal processes”.

Samsa appears to present the civilizing context of the story based on inspirations from his cultural background. Samsa seems to affirm that his situational setting is a town with many cultural events. Samsa supposes in his mind “these cultural institutions and processes influence my ideologies and way of thinking”.

I believe people care more about improving their financial status without caring about its effects on other people. For example, my father does not care about what I am going through provided he made money for the family”. Samsa finally supposes that his father’s hostility towards him show lack of appreciation for his money.

The major themes of Franz story were inspired by the cultural and historical events in Prague, which is the author’s town. The town was full of hostility which was caused by economic status and differences in people’s cultural backgrounds. The story is told using the interior monologue styles. It focuses on the thoughts and feelings of the main character which support the themes of abandonment and troubled relationship.
